The Cheney Torture Memos

My colleague Spencer Ackerman at the Washington Independent got his hands on those memos that Dick Cheney claims will vindicate the use of torture. Turns out….not so much. Strikingly, they provide little evidence for Cheney’s claims that the “enhanced interrogation” program run by the CIA provided valuable information. In fact, throughout both documents, many passages…

Last week I reprinted an email sent to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation by a West Point grad and active duty Army officer about his many experiences of having Christianity forced on him through mandatory prayers and his religious freedom violated repeatedly. On Monday, I received an email from another military officer currently serving in…

Hannity Waits for God’s Call Too

Michelle Bachmann isn’t the only one waiting for God’s encouragement to run for office; Sean Hannity says he, too, would run for president if God told him to. Egged on by radio colleague Bill Cunningham, Hannity said he would consider entering the front lines of the political fray if God directs him. “I’ve never made…

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist says that Florida hasn’t had any hurricanes since he took office – and it’s all because he prayed extra super duper hard to God to protect the state from them.

Livonia Council Candidate Channels God

Glenn Moon, one of 11 candidates for the Livonia City Council here in Michigan, was asked by the local chamber of commerce to submit a video talking about his goals for the city and the policies he advocates. The results are a bit strange, to say the least. After ranting about the evils of abortion…

Ridge’s Crazy Conspiracy Theory

I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that Tom Ridge, the Secretary of Homeland Security during the Bush administration, has a new book coming out that says that he was pressured to raise the terror alert level just prior to the 2004 election in order to help Bush win. Ridge, a former Republican governor of…

Those Evil Atheist Bus Ads Again

The Des Moines, Iowa transit authority reversed its initial decision and allowed an atheist group to purchase ad space on city buses with the entirely innocuous statement “Don’t believe in God? You are not alone” on them. Now one of the bus drivers is refusing to drive a bus with that sign on them, saying…

Locked Up for Breath Mints

Here is another perfect example of how the war on drugs destroys lives without anything remotely resembling due process. A man in Florida was pulled over for having expired tags on his license plate. He was chewing a breath mint when the officer came to the car and the officer thought it might be crack…

Any Ann Arbor Readers Out There?

For any readers in Ann Arbor, Michigan or the surrounding area, I’m going to be speaking at a Constitution Day event there on September 17. The subject is The Constitution and the National Surveillance State and I’ll be on a panel with my friend Dan Ray, who teaches constitutional law at Cooley Law School. We’ll…

Keeping Government Out of Medicare

Talking Points Memo reports on a new poll that shows that 62% of Republicans think the government should stay out of medicare, compared to 24% of Democrats and 31% of independents. It also showed that more Republicans believed that Obama was not born in the United States (40%) than believed he was (36%).
