Today's dumbass quote of the day comes from the dumbass of the century, our new friend Pat. I'd been too busy to look at the "Pat, Pat, Pat" thread after the first bunch of comments and didn't realize until Thursday morning that Pat had shown up to drop his pearls of, uh, "wisdom" in his usual charming manner. And this comment just made me laugh:
Whatever. You all think that this asshole Ed is so wonderful, because he likes to Mock the right, Religion, and Creationists. When in all honestly, he is a small petty man, with possibly gay tendencies. Not to mention, not much of a life. and you sheeple follow him, like a lost little bastards.
Yep, all the hallmarks of wingnuttery - the randomly capitalized words for no apparent reason; the total lack of anything even faintly resembling a substantive argument; most obviously, the breathtaking lack of self-awareness and inability to detect the irony being emitted by his world-class case of psychological projection.
Let's recap: This is the guy who initially claimed he could have me put in jail because I criticized something he wrote. Then he dug up my uncle's address and phone number and posted it, encouraging others to pay me a visit (he couldn't get to me himself, you see, because he has no car). And I'm the "small petty man" in this equation? The lack of self-awareness is truly a wonder to behold.
As for those "possibly gay tendencies," that's about equal parts funny and pathetic. It's pathetic because Pat actually thinks that's an insult and that anyone other than bigots like him would care. If I was gay, Pat, I would be quite open about it, just as I am open about my staunch support of equal rights for my gay friends. Ironically, the fact that you think someone's "possibly gay tendencies" actually matter is just another indication of what a small, petty man you are.
Speaking of projection, in another comment Pat wrote:
Hey asshole, it's a free fucking Country. I will write what a please on my blog. You don't like it. Don't fucking read it. Just that fucking simple.
This from the guy who showed up here originally to leave a comment because he didn't like something I wrote and the comment just said "fuck you." That's the only way I knew of his pathetic existence. And then he amusingly said he could have me put in jail for stalking for daring to criticize him (before posting my uncle's address, then having someone on another site post his address - and accusing them of stalking for doing the same thing he did to me. Seriously, how many ways can one person show themselves to be a hypocrite in one situation?).
Pat really would make a perfect psychological case study, wouldn't he? He has an extraordinary ability to place his own behavior in a vacuum, safely sequestered from his statements about the behavior of others, so that he can rant and rave at other people for doing, or in most cases falsely accusing them of doing, the exact same thing he has already done to them.
This is like the proverbial watching of the train wreck. I just can't look away.

Ed, you're missing the best part, a carless, unemployed mama's basement living Cheetos™ eater is implying that you don't have much of a life. Pat must live in the south, my experience is that those people have absolutely no sense of irony. (I know his location was revealed, but I really don't wanna waste the time looking it up.)

I suggest Pat get a new blog and start over because seemingly he cannot voice a coherent thought and Ed can't help noticing and ripping him for it. Consequently, we can't help laughing. I don't mind the entertainment value but the sheer stupidity doesn't bear the light of day.

At least he embraces paragraphs.
And for the third time, I'd like to note one of Pat's insults and James Hanley's response. Blog comment Hall of Fame stuff.
Repeated below:
Pat:
James Hanely:
I don't think I'll ever forget that exchange.

Man, MH, for a minute back then you almost had me thinking that there was hope for Pat, but - alas! - my instinct was correct, and he is just another idiot.
It is, nonetheless, sad to see that there are people who live like this.
Posted by: Valhar2000 | November 13, 2009 10:18 AM
LOL. I had missed that comment from Pat and James' brilliant response. What I find funniest about it is the accusation of being a pedophile pulled out of his ass. It's like he sat there thinking, "What's the worst thing I can accuse him of being without any evidence whatsoever? That'll put him in his place." Hilarious.
Posted by: Ed Brayton | November 13, 2009 10:19 AM
This is both sickening and fascinating. Fascinating because the internet and blogging have made it possible for anyone at all to write their views and toss them out there.
Sickening because some people are so stupid they think others will be interested in petty insults and insinuations about third parties they know nothing about.
If I were naive, I'd think Pat was a 12 year old with too much time on his hands and a computer. Unfortunately, I've seen enough adults with the same foolishness and frustration putting insults and nonsense out there without any interesting things to say.
Posted by: Moderately Unbalanced Squid | November 13, 2009 10:24 AM
As for those "possibly gay tendencies," that's about equal parts funny and pathetic. It's pathetic because Pat actually thinks that's an insult and that anyone other than bigots like him would care.
Just yesterday I had a bigoted asshat pull the, "You're gay!" card on me. He made "insulting" comments about how my boyfriend was probably proud. This was my response:
Oh, I get it. You're still in junior high. You don't actually have anything to say, so you think that if you imply that I'm a homosexual you'll win the argument because you don't actually have anything else to say.
Because now I'm supposed to be all, "Hey, I'm not gay! Gays are all icky and stuff!" Then everything gets derailed because I lose the original thread of the argument because of your ad hominem attack against my heterosexuality.
Well, first off, I'm not gay. Second, I don't take, "Dood, U R so gay!" as an insult. Third, you're an uneducated, bigoted jackass.
I then went straight back to the original issue at hand. I've decided this should be policy. All that the insults like this prove is that the person who is making them is uneducated and bigoted.
His next comment? A reiteration of the, "U R gay!" argument. Plus the standard trollish, "You've got anger issues."
Either way, after yesterday I've decided that in the event of future trolls the standard DNFTT should be my primary position. But if I don't my main policy will be to point out what bigotry the troll is showing, then return to the issue at hand. Because you'll never convince a troll that he or she is wrong, so the goal should instead be to show that the positions the troll holds cannot be defended by reason and that if they're so weak that stupid insults are all a person has that there's no reason to agree with them.
Posted by: Geds | November 13, 2009 10:30 AM
He still thinks calling people gay is an insult? Wow, he has really aged poorly for being only 12 years old, although that would explain why he still lives in his parents' basement...
Posted by: catgirl | November 13, 2009 10:39 AM
Ed @ 9:
For me, the pedophile charge isn't what puts this exchange into Hall of Fame terrority - that's standard stuff from a delusional conservative. Instead it's Pat claiming a three word insult, where he instead uses five words, and where his last two words has him ducking into Hanley's punch in a manner more extreme than any "ducking into the punch" event I've ever experienced.
If this exchange were in a fictional movie the 'suspension of doubt' required for the audience to buy-in to the moment would be considered too over the top. (OT, but that reminds of the Dover Trial.)

I second or third Michael Heath's assessment of the Pat/Hanley exchange. Just by virtue of it still being funny days later makes the effect even greater. I've rarely seen someone paint a bigger target on their ass. And I also see Behe at Dover in the same light. Behe was better educated but it did nothing to improve his ducking and weaving skills.

I think Ira @2 has it right. Pat is in love. Immature, inexpressible, puppy love that is passive-aggressively expressed as antagonism. Given his bitchy antagonism, inability to leave or directly address the issue, and cycling between teasing aggression, whining, and seeking sympathy by acting hurt it is clear that Pat is smitten. And clearly the fem/maso/passive in the relationship.
Ed, if your into sloppy, overweight and ill groomed white guys groveling, kissing your feet and cleaning your toilet this is your chance. Of course he is going to want to be spanked and there is a pretty good chance the whole thing will slide into bottles and diapers so there is likely to be a pretty big down side to Pat's adoration. One has to feel sorry for his mother.
Pretty much a walking advertisement for Planned Parenthood.

Pat, actually you are correct. I must confess, I am not a Marine, nor did I ever claim to be. Before that I was stationed at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport La. for field training. Pat @ 46:
That is simply not true.
Here's my first comment directed at you which I posted only in this forum. It's a substantial challenge asking for a cogent argument to back up assertions you posted earlier in the blog thread linked to here.
Also, here is a link to a comment I cross-posted here that I attempted to post at your site which you refused to post. It is not mere ad hominems but instead asking you to provide facts to back up the premises you used to create your argument, an argument I found incoherent and therefore asked for you to be a man and defend your position honorably. You instead chickened out and refused to post or respond. Your choice of course, but certainly not a character-driven response.
It's pretty clear to this crowd Pat that you are not able to make cogent arguments, and therefore fail to maintain an open forum at your blog. I'd argue because your arguments can't withstand the scrutiny. You therefore censor comments at your site while being capable only of ad homimens and misrepresentations of others or their arguments in this forum. Accusing others of what we've observed most frequently coming from you is called "projectionism"; it is behavior common to populist conservatives, in fact I've encountered very few that don't project.
Ed's arguments are cogent and while they certainly aren't always bullet-proof - no one can since many arguments advocate for positions where certainty is impossible, they're always arguable positions. Your's on the other hand are both incoherent and incapable of withstanding scrutiny given your dependence on misframing reality, making false asssertions, and a frequent dependence on rhetorical or logical fallacies. Not all, I did see some coherent arguments which is why I volunteered help in manning-up your game. An offer that no longer stands given the rife bigotry that's been on display from you recently - I have little tolerance for haters.
Ed maintains a open forum given his confidence in the quality of his own arguments. You'd become a better man if you monitored this site and learned from Ed. Developing character and integrity requires discipline, something I recommend you focus on better developing if you ever hope to make something of yourself.

I cruise these parts often but seldom comment. But I just have to say that Pat is far more than just another idiot. He is is truly the type character of the complete and total idiot and deserving of an appropriate level of recognition and appreciation for his seemingly effortless perfection in that category.
Are there really other contenders for such exquisite perfection in absolute idiocy? I know there's Bachmann and Palin and Beck (et. al.) but they just don't have the pure exposed raw rage.
I've seen many an idiot in many a cyber space aspire to the heights but Pat wins the Major Award in my book - he just has the whole package.

Pat really does seem to be the embodiment of everything that's gone haywire on the right since Obama got elected. Hypocrisy, frothing anger, ignorance, hate-filled violent rhetoric, all combined with complete impotence...that seems to me to characterize the teabaggers, talk radio demagogues, and public personalities on the far right. Pat has Limbaugh's bloviating arrogance, Prejean's chowder-headed stupidity, Coulter's vileness, Gribbit's psychological projection, and the teabagger's complete lack of self-awareness all rolled into one pathetic package living in his mother's basement.

OT . . .
Ed - Your 10/22 interview on your radio show of Air Force interrogater "Matthew Alexander*" related to his book was absolutely brilliant (listened to it on the podcast last evening). While I've read several books on our adventures in Iraq and closely followed the torture debate, my perspective on Iraq increased immensely based on your insightful questions having read "Alexander's" book and his responses. In fact three of "Alexander's" stories made up part of this evening dinnertime conversation.
* His pen name, I assume for reasons of national security and/or his own.
I would have provided a URL to the show but could only find a generic one, I'm not technically up to speed on exactly how podcasts work. I subscribe and all broadcasts get downloaded using one URL, therefore I couldn't provide a specific one. Here's the generic URL for all Ed's shows: http://feeds.feedburner.com/declaringindependencepodcast

Why would anyone post any personal information upon your request? You've already shown that you're quite willing to post people's personal information in an attempt to bully and threaten them into silence. You put Ed's Uncle's home up on your site and suggested that others pay him a visit, implying a violent outcome. Why would anyone in their right mind post their information for you?
No one who served in the military could be a liberal, ever?
You are such a fucking moron it is truly unbelievable. Where the hell do you think the veterans who played a major role in the anti-Vietnam protests came from? They were veterans by definition you asshat!
How do you get Kerry, Gore, Carter, Kennedy, Johnson, Truman? All veterans. Hell, by the standards of your moronic conservative movement Eisenhower would be considered a liberal!
James has provided enough information to support that he is, in fact, a liberal veteran. I served from '85 to '91 (counting reserves). Company 925 Great Mistakes RTC. Class '911 Damneck NTC. USS Oliver Hazzard Perry, USS Robert E. Peary. I was an Operations Specialist, finished up an OS2 (E-5) when I transferred from the active to inactive reserves). Personally, I'm so damn liberal I'll make your eyes bleed. Call me a Socialist Progressive Democrat and I'll thank you. I admire the hell out of Bernie Sanders and believe that the Democrats, as a party, are too conservative. Frothing yet Patty-girl?
My father was a multi-tour Vietnam combat vet. When he returned he marched in the Civil Rights movement and the anti-Vietnam war protests ... in other words, a liberal.
You really need to come out of that cellar, get some treatment for your paranoia and anger issues, stop blaming everyone else for the absolute fucking loser you appear to be, and then think about getting a job. Frankly, from what you've said, you appear to be the embodiment of everything you loath. A parasite that leeches off those of us who work, lazy, ignorant, loathsome. Get help.

Further more, James is accusing me of threatening him. Which I did not do. I simply said, I knew which STATE he lived in...and I do. I have no desire to hurt him or his family. I just want him to STOP e-mailing me and STOP trying to comment on my blog. I have told him ISP as much and will the FBI.

Dear Pat,
Do you or do you not have control over what comments to post on your blog? Do you or do you not have the ability to block email from certain addresses? Do you have any concept of how this whole internet thing works, anyway, or what a complete moron you look like after threatening to call the FBI on someone for suggesting you're a stalker after what you've done? If you do call the FBI, I would love to hear what they say. By all means, report back to us. If you can manage to capture it as an audio files, by all means do so.

3. I also offered to stop the sniping sessions. Which I did; I haven't posted a think about Ed on my Blog since, nor will I.
But yet, Ed continues to drag this out.
Yes, I will adding Mr. James's IP address to the blacklist.
I really do not think that I have anything that the FBI would even be interested in here. Nobody threatened anyone or anything. I just wanted the guy to leave me be. As I will do here. I won't be a punching bag for the left any longer.
From here on out, if Ed wants to quote me, mock me, ect... I'll do what I should have done, when I saw the stupid video mocking Republicans; Ignored it. But, you know me, I had to say something, like an idiot.

Unlikely that Pesky Pat has a friend at FBI, else he would not claim to have.
If he does call the Bureau, he's likely to get either a non-committal "thanks for reporting that," or put on hold and sent to a voicemail box, where the agents will draw straws to see who gets to call him back and tell him "I'm sorry there's nothing we can do with this at the moment" and then listen to him hurl nasty words at them before hanging up.
But if he keeps pestering them, hoo-boy they are going to give him a scolding with substance.
---
What I find really amusing about this is how a bunch of smart rationalists got successfully baited and trolled. The thing to do with an arsehole like Pesky Pat is to simply ignore him. Do not respond to his noise, and only ack his existence for the purpose of reminding people to ignore him.
Ignore him for a while and he will go away. Resist the temptation to reply to his nonsense at all.

This reminds me of a section in The Worst D&D Adventure Ever (aka The Bible), specifically Exodus when, after each plague, the Pharoah promises to let Moses and his people go, then at the last minute changes his mind and gets another plague. The author's comedic timing is off (it's funniest the third time; more than that, not so much) and this story keeps repeating - broken promise, plague, promise - until the author runs out of new plagues to invent ("A deluge of solicitors during the evening meal!", "A Flock of Seagulls!", "Carrot Top!", &c.)
So goeth Pat. Hurling insults of the sort expected of a Level 5 Half-Troll Paste Eater, Brave Sir Pat suffers a withering torrent of well-deserved abuse, everything from Cone of Mockery and Psychic Bitchslap to the mighty +10 Cluebat, until Brave Sir Pat once again "admits" "defeat", skulks away for a few days until his magical relic (Vecna's Empty Brainpan) recharges and he waddles valiantly back into the fray with a quiverfull of Teh Stupid. And so it goes...
My vote: Keep kicking him until either he learns to disagree using evidence and well-crafted argument or until he stops coming back. Pack a lunch; this may take a while.
Posted by: Bob | November 14, 2009 9:06 AM
Personally, I've had my fill of the Pat-baiting (but don't let that spoil anyone else's fun), so I'll try to say something serious here. What we see in his angry "Liberals suck/Conservatives rule!" refrain is not conservatism as the advocacy of a certain set of assertions about economics and governance. Those could be rationally argued for (as indeed folks like Michael Heath sometimes do) or against on their merits, practical compromise positions reached, and so on. Instead, it is naked tribalism, in which Liberal and Conservative are labels applied simplistically in response to a few ill-considered shibboleths about taxes, "socialism" and race. The content does not matter -- I doubt that Pat himself comprehends the ideas except as slogans -- only the choosing of a virtuous Us and a despised Them as an outlet for rage over his personal frustrations and failures.
Of course Pat and his ilk did not originate this view of the political world; he is the outcome at the grassroots level of the poisonous rhetoric served up by the likes of Limbaugh, Coulter, O'Reilly and the rest. If I wasn't feeling lazy this Saturday AM, I'd figure out exactly which circle of Dante's Hell they belong in, for that grievous sin against democratic civilization.

Bob @ 115:
I enjoyed your post.
However, Pat didn't masochistically come back looking to get beat on. Instead Ed went after Pat given Pat's racist rants against others.
One of my observations regarding all conservatives, except some of their intellectuals, is their inability to understand how their dishonest rhetorical attacks against others in the public square justifies our calling them out. Sarah Palin attacks much of America as not real, she's criticized, and she reacts by striking a persecution pose.
I continuously get viral conservative emails from some golf buddies. They're always dishonest hate-filled invectives against whichever
liberalnon-conservative they feel most threatens their ability to win the day in the public square, e.g., Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Charlie Crist, Colin Powell, and obviously now, President Obama. I have never once received a conservative viral email that was well-framed, honest, and most concerning, cogent. When I respond by dispassionately pointing out that what they are spreading is not true, i.e., the argument fails because the assertions used to build the argument are not true, they're personally offended and wounded I would be so mean to them for pointing out their attempts to dishonestly besmirch the character of another. It's as if those they attack are not American, not human, or in any way worthy of the same considerations they demand for themselves.
We now encounter this in Pat, which is why I went from attempting to help Pat from continuously being on the losing end of a debate to promoting his vilification given his spreading of racial hatred and unwarranted attacks on others that could enable some to justify violence.
It's this inability to think cogently, after observing this behavior for 40 years now, that convinces me that most are in fact delusional, a position I finally stopped resisting and accepted after watching the 2004 election unfold. Of course my position since that election has been amply validated since by the ever-increasing craziness we see out of them.
So Pat has not shown himself to be a masochist like our mroberts who has a cyclical tendency to come here get beat on after saying something particulary dishonest and hateful. Instead Pat's a failed human being who looks to blame others for his own failures, in this it's non-conservatives, who he mistakenly refers to as liberals. The fact the Republican party has decided to market itself in a way that attract and promote such dysfunctional behavior is a major reason I left that party after 29 years, which is nearly my entire adult life.
Posted by: Michael Heath | November 14, 2009 11:01 AM
@Eamon Knight: excellent, accurate analysis. Pat and the people like him are not conservatives, they're authoritarians, and their impulses are borne of tribalism, not reasoned political considerations.

Michael Heath:
I have friends who are lifelong members of the GOP. They are not people who would try to tell me that Mr. Obama is a lizard person from Kenya who wants to set up death panels in order to supply his reptilian overlords with ample supplies of meat, both fresh and aged on the hoof.
When I start hearing the sort of nonsense you're talking about in e-mails I block them. If people bring it up in public I tell them, generally in a fairly loud voice, just how far off base they are.
Posted by: democommie | November 14, 2009 12:57 PM
Pat: US Army, 1989-1991, 98GL SigInt Linquist, Fort Leonard Wood, Presidio Monterrey, Fort Huachuca, Fort Devens, Pentagon, Fort Eustis, and disabled vet. And progressive liberal with definate socialist tendencies. You can spot the liberals and socialists because we tend to be ones who serve for the greater good, not for personal glory (not always, but I have found this generalization to be (within my (admittedly) limited personal experiences and acquaintances) true more often then not).
That said, bise mich!

bet you were not vocal about your liberalism in the Military or they would have tossed you out. or shot and killed you and buried your sorry ass out behind the base somewhere.
Um, no. If I wasn't afraid to be a liberal openly in East Texas, then I certainly wouldn't be afraid of openly being liberal in the US Air Force--and wasn't. While in the service, I worked on political campaigns in my free time (we can do that, you know). Of course I supported Democrats. As long as it didn't interfere with my military career, I could do it all I wanted. And did.
My campaign work went right on my military performance evaluations, because you always need some resume fodder demonstrating community involvement when you're up for promotions. If you can scrounge up two brain cells to rub together, pat, think about what I did: Think about how I was openly declaring my political inclinations not just to the people writing reports who could decide my future, but for every bar, leaf or star who would ever look at it--nay, to the entire fucking Pentagon, even the President of the US of A! Your beloved, Ronald Reagan no less!. And Bush the Elder, too.
Would you put your career on the line that way, pat. Oh, wait. You'd need a job first, other than getting your next frag on Halo.
So it's a no-go with this bullshit about liberals not being in the military or being cowards. You'd know better, if you'd ever had the guts to back up your bullshit by enlisting (although I doubt you'd get past a recruiter--they could be discharged for letting in stupid and cowardly of your caliber).
If you somehow made it past the fail-safes to keep the likes of you out, you're the kind of guy whose gun should have carved on it: Never fired--dropped often.
