Off to the Nation's Capitol

Posted on: November 5, 2009 10:50 AM, by Ed Brayton

I am flying out on Friday to Washington DC for the annual Americans United for Separation of Church and State conference and blogger meetup. If anyone is interested in a meetup, leave a comment here and send me an email, perhaps we can arrange one on short notice. I don't know if PZ is planning to go this year or not. Last year we had a joint reader meet and greet that turned out really well. If he is going, perhaps we'll do the same thing again. Saturday lunchtime is probably the best time for such a meetup, at least in my schedule. I'll be staying in the Capitol Hill area. I'm also open to suggestions from locals on a good location for such a meetup (think casual atmosphere and good food).

La Loma on Massachuesetts near the Senate Office Buildings is good for that.

Teaism (various locations) has good, but not great food, but will allow you to call ahead and reserve a nook.

I would avoid anything too close the Capitol or the office buildings. They tend to be packed with interns and young Hill staff, so it's loud and crowded.

The Gallery Place/Chinatown and Barracks Row/Eastern Market areas are just a short metro ride away and offer more variety.

I've heard good things about Busboys & Poets www.busboysandpoets.com but have never been there.

If you want something on the House side of the Capitol, you might try Tortilla Coast and Bullfeathers; both are on First St SE, just south of the Capitol South Metro station.

Busboys & Poets is owned by some wonderful progressive people. The one in Shirlington has very good food... and it looks like the D.C. location has the same menu. (thanks for the web link Mandrake)

I heard there is going to be over 4.5 million people there!

I'd love to meet up this Saturday afternoon. Just let me know where and when, and I'll be there.

I'd be interested--unless that keeps other people away.

Two locations in DC. The 5th and K location isn't that far from Capitol Hill. Looks like a moderate walk or a pretty short Metro ride.

Heddle, I would love to meet you. Didn't know you were in the DC area.

I am in Yorktown. All your English readers should know where that is. I can drive up in about 2 1/2 hours. Maybe drop Mrs. Calvinist off at Crystal City. Let me know where the get-together is. But if PZ is there it may be too dangerous.

You gotta announce these things earlier. I would have been willing to make the drive, but not two days in advance.

PZ is not going this year, so you're safe.

Just remember that if you're having a gathering in DC you need to multiply the number of people in your party by 64. So, if you end up with a party of 6 then really you had a party of 384. If you had 70,000 guests, then you really had 4.48 million, and so on...
