You know, I had decided I was going to leave my new friend Pat alone. He was pretty much thoroughly humiliated a couple weeks ago when he tried to jump in to the deep end of the pool and I was reminded of Mencken's admonition that it isn't sound sport to agitate the mind of someone so hopelessly dense. But then a reader emailed me and caught me up to date on what I'd been missing over the last few days as Pat went off the deep end once again.
What set Pat off this time was the fact that one single Republican in the House of Representatives, Rep. Anh Cao of Louisiana, voted for the health care reform bill. And it revealed immediately that in addition to being a weapons-grade idiot, Pat is also a racist (I know; try not to be shocked). A sample of the tweets our boy wonder belched forth after Cao's vote:
@AnhJosephCao You Bastard piece of shit fuck! GO BACK TO Saigon, South Vietnam where you fucking BELONG GOOK!My Uncle served in Vietnam all he could stab this Country in the back. @samuel @levihenry @kerrence @tonyyeung @paparatti @Yeggo @frautoasty
Some of us, have not forgotten what happened on Dec 7, 1941 either! @samuel @levihenry @kerrence @tonyyeung @paparatti @Yeggo @frautoasty
@tonyyeung That's because LIBERALS like YOU LIED about the damn war, ya sland-eyed ASSHOLE
I'm really starting to distrust ANYONE of Eastern Descent. 1st it was John Yu, then it was Obama's guy saying we should repay China.
I'm head fucking serious... Al-Qaeda is not our Worst Enemy. The East is man. China, Japan, Vietnam, all of 'em. #tcot #hcr #killbill #VTO
Remember '41 people, this was their revenge on us. Ceo is a fucking Commie Plant in the G.O.P. #tcot #hcr #killbill #VTO
@FoxieNews Ya think? That rat bastard sold the G.O.P. up the river! and After all the Americans that went to 'Nam and Died. :-/ Pissed.
@samuel They had it coming after what they did to us at Pearl Harbor!!!!
@TexasRV Not to mention that Yellow man Cao that sold us up the damned river.
Whack Job my ass.... that bastard slant-eyed son of a bitch sold the G.O.P. up the fucking river and he knows it!
At one point, he even claimed that Japan was a communist country when they attacked us. But the fun was just starting. Wonkette published the first tweet above calling Cao a "fucking gook" and much amusement ensued. Someone in the comments there posted Pat's address -- and you might want to turn off your irony meters for this one -- and this was his response:
Oh, and to the liberal tools who called my house and posted my address. Ever heard of stalking laws? Besides all that; do you really think that I give two shits, if you know where I live? Please. I am not afraid of anyone; you want to come here and start some stuff? Feel free! But you'd better bring your lunch and have your life insurance policy paid up. Cause you are going to need it. For what it's worth, I don't need a damned gun. I will beat your sorry asses senseless in the damn street and then tell your mom why I did it. I don't play that intimidation game, not in this lifetime. Also, any packages show up here, that I did not order, I will call the police and I am sure they will be in touch with you. Think about that, before you send something stupid; which has been done before, and the dude went to jail for it.
Okay, let's recap. Dumbass Pat claimed he was going to have me put in jail for "stalking" him for writing a post criticizing something he wrote on a public blog. Then he posted what he thought was my address and encouraged people to show up at my door. And now someone did the same thing to him and he's invoking the stalking laws. Seriously, this guy isn't ducking into the punch, he's freefalling face first off a 10 story building into the punch.
Oh, and he's now made his Twitter feed private. And just to add a little bit more hypocrisy to all this stupidity, in the middle of all of this he posted the video of Markos Moulitsas making a completely accurate statement about Tom Tancredo as "proof that liberals are classless assholes."
So for those of you scoring at home: Pointing out -- accurately -- that a former legislator refused to fight in a war he supported despite being of draft age makes you a "classless asshole." Calling a legislator a "fucking gook" and telling him to go back to his own country for casting a vote one doesn't like is perfectly fine. You really have to marvel at his total immunity to irony.

Cao lives in a highly Democratic district and only won in 2008 because he was running against William "cold cash" Jefferson. Evidently Pat thinks that all Republicans should represent his desires rather than those of their constituents.

I can't even begin to address Pat's racism, though. Apart from being appalling, it's not even grounded in reality to suggest that China, Korea, Vietnam, and Japan are united in any purpose, let alone an anti-American one. But that's just reality's well-known liberal bias showing again, I suppose...
Posted by: Squiddhartha | November 10, 2009 10:04 AM
Ed, you forget: it ain't irony if I know I'm right and know you're wrong. If you're wrong, then what you think is irony is just more wrongness. If I'm right, then what looks to you like my irony is just a cloud of your stupidity distracting you from realizing just how stupidly wrong you are, which will not happen because, ironically, you're a liberal which means your deep interest in irony is a congenital condition which prevents you from changing your mind.
On a more serious note, why do we care about Pat? Obviously the Pats of the world (the ones elected to Congress and running LGF, et al) are pushing a large and festering raft of claims into the marketplace of ideas; these claims jostle and adhere together like pack ice and give bad journalists a way to stay relevantly rich by reporting what their customers want to hear. But the spectrum of people who operate this way are utterly immune to reason or persuasion, from the frothing shouters at tea-bag rallies up to the K-street whores and reptilian millionaires who suckle them.
It is gratifying to needle them, and they needle easy. But the transparent foolishness of their positions is a clue that the positions aren't relevant to any actual dialogue. I'm starting to wonder if we should just ignore them and take a new tack.

Also, the guy went on the radio here and made a weird and kind of charming case for wasting his vote. I'm a fan.

For the record, I'm no longer following Pat and feeding his swill to anyone. I gave up on him a couple of days after Ed posted his last blog post on Ed.
Secondly I humbly concede there is no hope for Pat. I claimed there was after perusing his entire blog site in our first go round with young Pat. I then proceeded to provide him with some right wing reading materials that might get him to think, act, and argue more rationally. He rejected my offer to counsel. Therefore Ed was correct in dissenting to my assertion Pat was salvageable from a life of incompetence, ignorance, delusion, irrational and unthinking submissiveness to his group, bigotry and hatred. This sort of rant coupled to all our other findings is a convincing argument that Pat is incapable of being a moral creature with integrity.
Personally I find the insults regarding his physical appearance bigoted and not helpful to our cause either. We are better than that. Liberals should not obtain their insults from the conservative playbook, one loses the moral highground.

Yeah, that Pat really looks like he's in shape to woop anyone's ass, I tell ya. I'm shakin' in my boots here.

Posted by: FastLane | November 10, 2009 10:21 AM
Pat's a great success in a world where education, clarity, consistency, and thoughtful moderation are weaknesses. That doesn't mean that he can't claim those qualities, by the way, but based on his work I'd say he probably can't; I think he's mentally ill. But there are lots of people who can write or speak clearly and moderately but choose not to. That may be the definition of a demagogue, I'm not sure. But they are worthier opponents than Pat, and do far more damage.
Speaking of Franken the commedian, unfit to serve in Congress, etc.--he's working out pretty well:

It's almost worth putting up with regular trolls just to encounter gems like this. Sometimes you just find one that is hilariously stupid. Just yesterday I found a troll on a different blog who didn't understand that plants reproduce sexually, and it was quite fun. Not only did he go on and on about how basic biology is wrong, another troll on the thread even backed him up. It was the best laugh I had had in awhile.

DaveL,
It's a very long post about abortion and it's over 400 comments (and might be still going). I was thinking of summarizing the finer points when I get a chance, but here's the link:
http://pandagon.net/index.php/site/comments/misogyny_hijacks_health_care_reform_vote/
It starts around comment #348, with me presenting the analogy that an apple seed is at the same stage of development as the fertilized eggs that are left over from IFV. The troll's name is Austin Nedved, if that makes it easier for you to follow. There's plenty of other stuff going on in that thread that's not as hilarious.
The sad thing is, I don't think this troll is even a creationist, just very, very stupid about biology. There's even a point where he claims that a "male" seed might or might not be fertilized by a female somehow, but it's not necessary for a tree to grow, because it's like adding salt to food. He claims later that he got the terms "male" and "female" mixed up, but I'm not buying it.

So, the story goes like this.
Jonah Goldberg is sitting in a bar in the District, sucking down a few martinis. He sees an asian sitting a few stools down, sneaks up behind him and knocks him off his barstool. The fellow is laying on the floor, stunned for a moment. He says, "What the hell are you doing?" Goldberg says, "I'm Jonah Goldberg and you japs attacked us at Pearl Harbor!." The fellow on the floor says, "I'm not japanese, I'm chinese you fool!". Jonah's reply: "Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese all you gooks are the same!".
Jonah, feeling quite pleased with himself, turns to go back to his drink. All of a sudden, WHAM!, he gets hit from behind by a barstool. He groans and rolls over to see the man HE just attacked holding a barstool, poised for another blow. He bleats, "What are you doing!?". The chinese man says, "My grandfather was a stoker on the Titanic and YOU sank that ship, murdering him!". Jonah says, "That was an iceberg you idiot, I'm a Goldberg". The chinese man hefts the chair for another blow and says, "Iceberg, Steinberg, Goldberg--they're all the same to me!".

The comparison to France and the Holocaust isn't a good one since the Vichy government cooperated with the Nazis in sending Jews and other targeted groups to the concentration camps.
A better analogy might be blaming Belgium or Denmark for the Holocaust.

@DavidL David, i like to mess with peoples heads and ask them: "what's the name of that animal?" "It's a Cow," they reply. "No, a cow is it's sex. Cow means female and bull means male, what is the name of the animal? You have bull and cow elephants, bull and cow walruses, what is the name of that animal?"
You should see the blank looks that gets.
Posted by: Chilidog | November 10, 2009 11:29 AM
Agreed here. But can I say it's at least a little refreshing to see people around here criticizing a male's appearance for once? Granted, if his gender were flipped but with roughly the same physical attributes and demands for the opposite sex, I'm sure it would be much worse. I cringe every time I see someone stoop to this level, especially when they're on my side of the argument. I fully believe in holding my friends to a higher standard than my enemies.
I don't even mind someone unattractive who demands attractiveness in the opposite. It's easily possible the sum total of their personality, intelligence, wealth, etc. merits it. In Pat's case... he'd better be a secret billionaire, but I digress.

A better analogy might be blaming Belgium or Denmark for the Holocaust.
True story: my Swedish-born grandmother owns a business in central Wichita, Kansas. She has a delightful anecdote about the summer of 1991, during the anti-choice "Summer of Mercy" protests, when anti-abortion protesters were swarming the city, and many of them were gathered in the neighborhoods near my grandma's store. They would come inside to use the store's bathroom and drinking fountain, only to harass and harangue my grandmother for not being outside railing against reproductive freedom. Anyway, one of them said to her, " How can you live with yourself?! All those millions of people!"
My grandma was naturally confused. When she asked the guy to explain what he meant, he told her that "her people" had killed millions of people in the Holocaust. My grandma then told him that she was Swedish, not German.
The guy sneered. "Swedes, Germans...they're all the same."

RE: Catgirl and plants and seeds.
The equivalency between the seed and human reproduction is even more troublesome for this Austin person than is argued in that thread. What's inside the seed is *not* equivalent to a zygote. It's far beyond that stage. What's inside a seed is essentially a food source and a pretty much fully formed "baby" plant, complete with tiny leaf-like structures and a tiny root structure. When the seed germinates, this tiny plant is ready to immediately begin to expand and grow, using the stored food in the seed until it can poke out into the sunlight, at which time those tiny leaves immediately expand and start photosynthesizing. So that "baby" inside that seed is much more like a near-term fetus than a zygote!

Umm, actually my point was directed at the insanity of attacking a gentleman of Vietnamese ancestry, calling him a gook, and ordering him "back to Saigon" thereby heaping scorn and abuse on someone who likely suffered greatly in his youth, along with his family, as a result of a confusing war in which the United States was ostensibly supporting the South Vietnamese, in particular the people most likely to have survived the subsequent purge and flight to the West, and then LEFT THEM ALL TO DIE.
Sorry if my "skewed view" left you unable to determine whether or not I am capable of drawing a distinction between the peasants, the soldiers, and the commanders of a war-time ally, or in ordering the relative political power of those groups, in a far-flung Eastern cultural milieu that no longer exists due to the complicated political wranglings of powerful Cold War interests.
What I do know is that anyone of Vietnamese ancestry that made it out of that hell-hole and into the United States despite our shameful desertion (that left thousands of people exposed to the most vile kinds of torture and deprivation at the hands of a vicious and vengeful enemy) deserves our respect, and admiration, and maybe even contrition.
He certainly does not deserve the kind of abuse he is taking from Pat.
I'll try to be more clear in the future.

First, he spouts moronic racist crap that one would expect from the 40s when major news services had public service announcements helping people figure out who the "good chinks" were from the "bad japs" so idiots like Pat would quit beating the shit out of innocent people who weren't even of the ancestry involved in Pearl Harbor. That he makes comments like this in the 21st century is quite disturbing.
Then, for him to tell Congressman Cao to "go back to Saigon" at the same time he touts his uncles service is unbelievable. He must not have even bothered to look at the guy's profile or even Wikipedia. His father served in the RVA (IE was his uncle's Ally) and ended up surviving 8 years in an NVA POW/re-education camp.
Pat is a complete waste of human flesh.

Sent Pat an e-mail a few weeks ago encouraging him to Be A Man, Enlist! And he informed me he was 37 yrs old with 2, count'em 2, bad knees. Now, if you will go to Operation Yellow Elephant, you can see an article touting the patriotism of a 41 yr old. Pat, fails to understand that if he were to Be A Man and Enlist! the military would pay for his bad knees to be fixed. Wait, that would be funded by the government, which means that all our boys in uniform are being treated by commies and marxists. Wait another minute, that means our boys in uniform are really the RED ARMY! Wait, wait, does this mean that the teabaggers are right? Pat, You really should reconsider and Be A Man, Enlist! I know you have bad knees but the military will cover all your medical expenses and as far as being 37 years old, they will take you up to the age of 41. I would myself but I am 45 and I already served with an honorable discharge. Besides from what I saw of your picture and heard about you on Ed Brayton’s site, you could use the money and the exercise. Plus, with your obvious love of the Corps, you would get to kill all the ragheads you could eat. I dare you to post this you sissy chickenhawk! James M. Phillips

But it is nice to see other conservatives/teabaggers on Twitter and elsewhere now condemning you, and rightly so.

Since he is not going to publish my e-mail that I wrote back....I'll do it:
You quite obviously do not read my blog, at all.
I really do not want to have this discussion with you at all.
However, because you're such like a small child, that will not do what it is told. I will answer your idiotic question.
I am not, nor have I ever been, and unless that party makes some HUGE changes; a Republican. I am an Independent Conservative. I voted, as it says on my Blog, for the libertarian ticket. Did I agree with ALL of Bob Barr's running platform? No. But I wasn't about to vote for the Socialist.
I am just going to tell it like it is, if you want to run back to that stupid forum and post what I write, fine, I really do not care.
My feelings about the Democratic Party changed during this past election cycle. How so? You could say that, when I saw the cutting oil that was put on the Vietnam War memorial in D.C. by anti-war protesters; and the lack of outcry from the Democratic Party, that it changed me. You could say that, when I figured out that the DNC is all about Identity Politics and stirring up Black hatred towards whites, that it changed me. Which is pretty fucking ironic seeing my family, nor anyone up the food chain from me ever even owned slaves. Further more, it is pretty fucking ironic, that the democratic Party was for the oppression and outright segregation of the Negro race for years and lets not even talk about the fucking civil war. That is, until someone figured out that you "Use them there Niggers for a vote...." I say that in the voice of those who made that little decision. --- You could say that when I figured out that the Democratic Party is about herding people up and putting them into categories for the purposes of getting their votes, that it changed me.
Now, do I believe that Democrats are Unamerican? Not all of them, some, like the so-called "Blue dogs" are not. But the far left progressives are Anti-American as fucking hell.
I'm just gonna tell you straight sir, I am a Conservative, and I make no damn bones about it. I don't owe you or that foggot idiot that runs that board an apology for my beliefs. This is still fucking America and you damn Communist Liberals haven't taken my right to free speech away. Don't like it, too bad. I owe yo liberal bastards jack fucking shit.
Good day!

his response?
Pat. read my previous email and settle down it can't be good for your heart to get that upset. Oh yeah, your welcome! JMP
my reply:
See? When you don't have a good response. You retort with dumb stuff like that.
Which is another reason why I do not bother with answering idiots like you.
...and then he comes back with the classic liberal line:
So, let me get this straight. My saying that I would die fighting for your right to say whatever you want, even when I disagree is a "dumb retort"? I'm sorry I thought that was the foundation of this country and the ideals put forth by the Founding Fathers. Or, do you come from the George W. Bush school that states the Constitution "is just a fucking piece of paper"?
Blame Bush, when you disagree with me.
How lame.

I guess we should not be surprised to learn that Pat's perfectly ignorant that the reason the Democratic party was historically dominated by racists until the late 1950s/mid-1960s was because it was populated at that point by Southern conservatives who dominated the Senate for 75+ years until LBJ left that caucus in the mid-50s to work with liberal Democratic Sen. Hubert Humphrey.
The fact that those conservatives have almost completely moved over to the Republican party and have come to dominate it, and that his blog posts indicates that he shares the very same ideology in non-racist matters and tendencies towards racism - though possibly of different skin colors than the old guard, seems to have gone completely over his brain stem.
Also, Pat - it's President Obama, not "Barry". You may not like him, but he's holds the office of the President of the United States because more Americans voted for him than any other candidate. And as much as I came to despise President George W. Bush's record and character, I always referred to him with respect, such as President Bush 43 or other descriptive moniker that showed the office respect.
I also get a kick out how Pat wants to honor the Marines with a blog post, but is too childish to handle criticism coming from a real Marine where he won't post that Marine's comments (at least he hadn't as of 5:32 p.m.).
Mr. Philips, while I agree with your advice to Pat, it appears he does not possess the character and discipline necessary to make it out of bed for the first reveille let alone become a Marine. Also, thank-you for your service to our country.

The Constitution of the United States of America applies to U.S. Citizens and not to Non-Uniformed combatants. If that's what you're referring to.

Thanks for your service. From what you've revealed about your career and your unit in some other blog posts I'm guessing that you deal just fine with such nonsense.
When I was an airman back in the day (68-72) most of the military folks I talked to (not just fellow airmen) were somewhat ambivalent about the Vietnam situation and not a conservatively monolithic group. Of course most of us were "getting out asses shot off dodgers" or draftees, but that's another story.;)

Yeah, one of the things I find most interesting is how much emotional energy is tied up in convincing ourselves that OIF and OEF (well, actually GWOT overall) are just. Same thing happened during the Gulf. Rather than a lot of ambivalence, I see a distinctly bimodal distribution of views on current operational posture (and an unbalanced one at that...).

Hanley: How about the Hands Off My Junk Party? I've always wanted to see a political party with a double entendre in its name.

What I found amusing about this is that Pat claimed victory when James "left," but he still had at least half a dozen liberals more than happy to point out his deficiencies and he left. Typical conservative attitude, claim victory and run away.
[Note to Pat-ty girl: If you do take the bait and come back to "battle" me, realize that I am going to be at work for the next few hours, so if I don't reply, I didn't run away, some of us have to support worthless unemployed conservative white trash like you.]
Have a nice day! ;o)

We have one of those! Every fall a buddy and I take all the scotch whisky out of our cupboards and every bottle that is at 1/2 full or less is separated for the cull. We invite a bunch of people, put on our kilts, eat haggis, tatties & neeps, play Celtic music and do our best to cull the weak, infirm and aged (a 30 yo Highland Park is the oldest in the herd now) from the counter.
I have 23 bottles in the cupboard now, and 11 are looking ready for the cull.
