Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Joyous Kwanzaa

Posted on: December 25, 2009 9:02 AM, by Ed Brayton

Most importantly, Happy Festivus! Let the feats of strengths begin! This is just an open thread for everyone to wish each other a wonderful day. It really doesn't matter what the reason is for gathering together with family and friends and sharing a meal and the kindness of gifts. Whatever the pretense, it's a good thing to do. So everyone have a great day and enjoy the camaraderie.

While I have spent more time at Pharyngula than here, I'm becoming a FOE (Fan of Ed). Merry Christmas (in the broadest secular sense) to all!

Reading Ed and Greg Laden will help me with my intention to become politically active for progressive causes in 2010.

BTW, weather here in Detroit/SE Michigan for this Christmas morn is more like March: steady rain, wind, gray, and cold. A good match for the sad state of our State.

Resisting my proclivity to procrastinate I hereby assert my New Years Resolutions now:
1. To finish an essay entitled: THE FALLACY OF PUNISHMENT. (Or has that been done better than I can do it?)
2. To restore my 1875 banjo, and play it!
3. To continue being a credit to my community providing that does not conflict with No. 2.
4. To add intelligent discourse to this forum.
Peace and prosperity, all!

Merry ChriKwanukahanlia to all and sundry, especially the sundry who often suffer neglect at these times.

Rodney:

My New Year's resolution is to be less judgmental, more tolerant and to seek rapport with all of the deluded fucking loser asshats who troll this blog. It's a work in progress.

Peace and serenity to all whether you celebrate the holiday or not.

And a tip o' the hat to the firefighters/EMTs/cops/hospital staff who are working today. May they be bored to tears!

I wonder if I might crave your momentary indulgence in order to discharge a by no means disagreeable obligation which has, over the years, become more or less established practice in government service as we approach the terminal period of the year — calendar, of course, not financial — in fact, not to put too fine a point on it, Week Fifty-One — and submit to you, with all appropriate deference, for your consideration at a convenient juncture, a sincere and sanguine expectation — indeed confidence — indeed one might go so far as to say hope — that the aforementioned period may be, at the end of the day, when all relevant factors have been taken into consideration, susceptible to being deemed to be such as to merit a final verdict of having been by no means unsatisfactory in its overall outcome and, in the final analysis, to give grounds for being judged, on mature reflection, to have been conducive to generating a degree of gratification which will be seen in retrospect to have been significantly higher than the general average.

{Yes Minister}

Hope everyone has a good one. :-)

Merry Squidmass and Happy Monkey, Ed!!

The turkey is in the oven, pies are baked, the kids are home and we had a splendid morning here in Houston opening presents and watching the cat chase the wrapping paper.

The cat, of course, got the best gift of all - a catnip octopus!

There is a pretty secular carol in Romania about the holidays called Florile Dalbe (The White Flowers). Romania is the last place I'd expect to have a secular carol.

Scoală gazdă din pătuţ/ Wake up host from your bed
Florile dalbe/The white flowers
Şi ne dă un colacuţ/And give us a knot-shaped bread
Florile, florile dalbe./The flowers, the white flowers.

Ca mămuca n-o făcut/Because mother didn't make any
Florile dalbe/The white flowers
Sită deasă n-o avut,/She didn't have a thick sieve
Florile, florile dalbe./The flowers, the white flowers.

Pă când sită o căpatat/When she got the sieve
Florile dalbe/The white flowers
Covata i s-o crăpat/Her bowl cracked
Florile, florile dalbe./The flowers, the white flowers.

L-o sfădit mama pe tata/Mother quarreled with Father
Florile dalbe/the white flowers.
Di ce s-o crăpat covata/Because the bowl cracked
Florile florile dalbe./The flowers, the white flowers.

Cănd covata o lipit/When the tureen was glued
Florile dalbe/the white flowers.
Cuptorul l-i s-o urnit/Her oven budged
Florile, florile dalbe/the flowers, the white flowers.

Cănd cuptorul o tomnit/When the oven was repaired
Florile dalbe/the white flowers.
Anul Nou o si zânit/The New Year Eve already came
Florile, florile dalbe./The flowers, the white flowers.

Florile, florile dalbe/The flowers, the white flowers.
Florile, florile dalbe./The flowers, the white flowers.
