The Washington Times Kills an Irony Meter

Posted on: December 10, 2009 9:16 AM, by Ed Brayton

Before the Washington Times closed up shop, they did give us one more hilarious bit of chutzpah with an editorial column claiming that global warming was a cult. No, seriously:

Belief in global warming had long had a tinge of theology about it, a form of cultism that adherents and defenders elevated to a holy crusade.

Someone who works for the Rev. Sun Myung Freaking Moon just called something else a cult. They don't make irony meters strong enough to withstand that kind of blow.

Right, only an e-meter can withstand that kind of blow.

Having spent too much money replacing broken irony meters, I have finally decided to go to my doctor and get the irony vaccine, so I can just become immune. I saw an ad for it at WND, and they swear by it.

I'm sorry James, but you cannot get an irony vaccine from your doctor. Only priests or televangelists can administer the shot. For a tithe. And your soul.

"Academic ponzi scheme"? Seriously?

I don't know what more hilarious: that the right says data was manipulated but can't quite say how. Or...

The HILARIOUS representation of climate scientist as lords of the earth sitting atop giant piles of money surrounded by acolytes and fawning world leaders. While it's true that scientist are often fame whores (remember Jonas Salk's reality TV show?), I'm not so sure it's an adequate description in this case.

Reminds me of the fundamentalist Christians who claim not to be religious, because 'religions' are rules and rituals made by people, but Christianity is a personal relationship with God. Self-awareness fail?

They really don't get it, do they? I would *love* to see real evidence that global warming isn't happening, or isn't a problem. Please, show me. Just make it real evidence and not stupid carping about how climate scientists have a bad attitude or "hockey sticks!!1!!!"

Seriously. I WANT to believe our world isn't becoming less habitable. So go ahead. Show me. I'm waiting.

uh... should they be told the irony vaccine contains thimersol (a preservative which prevents bacteria from infecting it) , aluminum (an adjuvant which strengthens the body's immune response to it), and squalene (another adjuvant)?

Unfortunately, there are a great many far-left environmentalists for whom AGW IS very much an article of faith. These fall in the 'embarrassing allies' part of the spectrum, but rationalists need to stress that their views are not our own; simply that we are concerned about global warming, and they happen to be as well.
