From Newt Gingrich, engaging in a little vomitous projection:
“Of course it’s the nature of the modern Congress, which hires lots of nice young staffers who have never had a real job, who spent their entire life being arrogant to visitors from back home, who end up thinking they know a lot because they stay up until 3 o’clock working on a word processor, and who write legislation as though they have some contact with reality,” he said, eliciting laughter.
I’ve known, and know, lots of Congressional staffers. In almost all cases they work far harder than those they work for and for far less pay and very little glory. Many of those staffers — the ones who are hired to advise on particular subjects — are far better educated and more knowledgeable than the legislators that get all the money and camera time.
I’ve known lots of legislators who couldn’t find their ass with both hands and a map without their aides guiding them. Everyone who’s ever spent any time around Washington DC or a state capitol learns quickly to spot the legislators who are too dumb, the ones who are run entirely by their staffers because they don’t know a damn thing about anything. Get their staffers out of the office with a scotch in front of them and they’ll tell you what an idiot their boss is — off the record, of course.
In most Congressional offices, it’s the staffers that do the real work. And by the way, when was the last time Newt had a real job?
