From Newt Gingrich:
Former Republican House speaker Newt Gingrich said Obama and the Democrats will regret their decision to push for comprehensive reform. Calling the bill “the most radical social experiment . . . in modern times,” Gingrich said: “They will have destroyed their party much as Lyndon Johnson shattered the Democratic Party for 40 years” with the enactment of civil rights legislation in the 1960s.
First of all, the notion that the Democratic Party was “destroyed” by the civil rights legislation of the 60s is ridiculous. The major bill was passed in 1964. Since that time, the Democrats have controlled the White House 20 out of 48 years (counting to the end of Obama’s term), while Republican have held it 28 years. Change the outcome of a single election and they’re dead even.
In Congress, Democrats have controlled the House for 34 of the 46 years (counting to the end of the current session) and the Senate for 30 of the 46 years since that legislation was passed. Wow, how….”destroyed” that party has been. And that was even after a whole bunch of racist southern Democrats — the Dixiecrats — left the party to join the Republicans in the wake of the 1964 legislation.
