CIA Deliberately Destroyed Interrogation Tapes

Posted on: April 23, 2010 9:02 AM, by Ed Brayton

The ACLU released documents last week gained through a FOIA request the other that show clearly that the CIA deliberately destroyed interrogation tapes because they knew what the tapes showed was illegal and would cause great damage to the agency if released. The memos released show CIA officials discussing that fact and talking about how the tapes should be destroyed.

Marcy Wheeler, as always, has an incredibly thorough look at the documents released and has been analyzing them.

Well, since evidence of a blatant crime has been made public surely a full DOJ investigation will be undertaken any minute now. That is unless this falls under "looking backward, and not forward". It's funny how that slogan almost appears to only be applied selectively when the results of an investigation would embarrass the federal government.

How can we trust an intelligence agency that can't even conduct a proper cover up?

In any other case, the willfull destruction of compromising evidence would be a crime on itself, and the judge would allow the plaintiff side to draw any number of damaging inferences from that fact.

But, in that case, the CIA didn't steal 1 million dollars.
They merely inflicted pain, great amounts of pain to human beings. That's hardly a crime, no ?

It depends... were they terrorists? ...or Muslims? Or perhaps they just looked like they might have some Arab blood in them?

Or maybe they weren't Americans... then that means it's not a crime, right? This extends to those who aren't real Americans, too. If you aren't a flag-pin wearing patriot -- like them nasty sosholist librels -- then it's not a crime to inflict pain on you either. lol

understanding the basic underlying crimes are different, how can true blue lefties cry foul about pisspoor techniques, ethical infringements and destruction of information for the CIA and not the CRU as well? wrong is wrong is wrong is wrong.
