Ellen Killed American idol!

Gary McCullough, director of Christian Newswire, has written a hilariously idiotic screed blaming lesbianism for the decline in ratings of American Idol. Because Ellen is a judge now and being gay conflicts with the “family entertainment” of the show. Or something.

On Friday the top story from Billboard, the world’s premier music publication, was, “Can ‘American Idol’ Be Saved?” While renewal talks continue with FOX, excuses for the show’s decline have been widespread. This season’s new judge, Ellen DeGeneres, is the recipient of a good deal of the blame for the rating drop, but not for the glaringly obvious reason: Miss DeGeneres is a lesbian activist.

Riiiight. Which must explain the high ratings for her own talk show too. And where does he get the idea that American Idol is supposed to be some kind of wholesome entertainment? It’s a show to produce pop stars, for crying out loud. And even the good little God-fearing girls like Carrie Underwood are flashing a ton of skin for the cameras these days, aren’t they?

DeGeneres’ “Yes, I have loved a woman,” comment from the May 11th show, was the most obvious lesbian-one-liner, but it wasn’t the only one, and it is hurting the show’s ratings. I can hear the bloggers loading their homophobe-blasters, but think this through with me. If one of the judges was an abortion activist, or a political right winger — and continued to insert comments in line with their activism — the same criticism would be true, and the show would suffer. The advice, “Shut up and sing!” comes to mind.

At this moment in entertainment history, network television is on a pro-homosexuality bender. The producers of American Idol chose to be a part of this push; it was a huge mistake. The consequences of this choice were a drop in market share and a reduction in advertising dollars. While many entertainers who profess an alternate sexual lifestyle are individually accepted and enjoyed by the public — when sexual behavior becomes their identifying trait in a specific broadcast, it limits the audience they will draw.

What fucking universe does this guy live in?

Look, I couldn’t care less if American Idol loses ratings and goes away. I’ve never watched the show and I never will. I avoid going into any place that has karaoke and have no desire to watch it on television. But this notion that Ellen killed the ratings because she’s a lesbian is simply delusional.
