In case you needed more evidence that the goals of the religious right in America often aligns with the goals of radical Islam around the world, take a look at this letter sent by two religious right congressmen, Chris Smith of New Jersey and Trent Franks of Arizona, to the nations on a UN committee that controls the recognition of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
The letter demands that they vote not to give recognition to the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission as an official consultative group to the UN. TPM shows you who these two are aligning themselves with:
Among the countries voting against the application: Egypt, Angola, Burundi, China, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia and Sudan. In all those countries but Russia and China, LGBT people can be jailed, fined, whipped or killed if they are caught by authorities.
Not only a bunch of Muslim nations with Sharia law in place, but Communist China too! And here’s who they were writing to:
They wrote the letter to representatives from many of the other countries on the Economic and Social Council.
Countries on the council include places where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by imprisonment, whipping, or death: Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Egypt and Pakistan are the most famously harsh countries. Homosexuality is also illegal in Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, Mauritius, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and Zambia.
So here they are aligning themselves with some of the most repressive nations in the world in order to prevent an LGBT group from having a seat at the table. Thanks for making it so obvious, guys.
