Dispatches from the Creation Wars

In case you were wondering where all this demagoguery over the Islamic center near Ground Zero leads:

Federal officials are investigating a fire that started overnight at the site of a new Islamic center in a Nashville suburb.

Ben Goodwin of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to CBS Affiliate WTVF that the fire, which burned construction equipment at the future site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, is being ruled as arson.

Special Agent Andy Anderson of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told CBS News that the fire destroyed one piece of construction equipment and damaged three others. Gas was poured over the equipment to start the fire, Anderson said.

Arson? Try terrorism. That is what it is, an attempt to destroy people and property and instill fear in a community in the name of a holy war against all Muslims. And yes, this is directly tied to the kind of hatred spewed by opponents of the Manhattan Islamic center.

Just like the situation in Manhattan, the people who would use that Islamic center have been here for years, often decades, and have worshiped and lived peacefully in the community all that time. Only when they decided to put up a new building did the bigots and demagogues come out of the woodwork and start demonizing them as though they’d landed in a UFO last week.
