Best Gay Rights Protest Signs

Posted on: August 22, 2010 10:03 AM, by Ed Brayton

Here's a hilarious Youtube video full of great signs from gay rights protests and counter-protests. My favorite: "We can't ALL marry Liza Minelli!"

My favorite is, "Jesus had 2 dads and he turned out fine."

Notice how all the anti-gay protesters are frowning and all the pro-gay protesters are having fun? It's almost as if hatred makes you miserable.

Fantastic! I'll "pass it along".

The first big "Gay Pride" event in town (Urbana, Ill) was this last Friday...

I was in Urbana last Friday and didn't see a word on it. Either they need to advertise more or I need to pay more attention to my surroundings.

Thank you for this, Ed. After seeing some depressing and/or facepalm-worthy stories on Pharyngula and Respectful Insolence this morning, I needed a laugh.

So many laughs here.
Brandon hit the nail right on the head The anti-gay protesters must hate life because they look so miserable. Remember, "gay" means "happy" too.

Life can't be happy when not only do you feel fear and hostility toward all those who don't belong to your narrow ingroup, but those people are themselves becoming happier, more open, and more accepted every day.

I wonder what SMG gets from blocking these videos. Do they think Google will cave and pay them more? It was a pretty stupid decision for Germany to leave out fair use of the EUCD implementation. Of course, no EUCD or DMCA would be even better.

Does that fella with the sign quoting from Romans not realise it's talking about the people of Sodom, not people that practice sodomy? You go back in time and rant at the Sodomites for being Sodomites and it's not going to mean the same thing as it does now. It's not like sodomy was only happening in Sodom or Sodom was condemned just for widespread sodomy.

Just seeing how much sodom I could pack into a single post.

Actually, Lucas, the Romans cite (if you're talking about the one with the "I'm with stupid" sign to the right) doesn't reference the inhabitants of Sodom at all, nor does it use the term "sodomite" even in the KJV or Geneva Bible (and yes, I actually checked). It's Romans 1:16-32, and it contains the usual tidbits like "And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another" (vs. 17a, KJV), etc.

In your defense, however, the term "sodomite" is absolutely idiotic - and, not coincidentally, basically a dead giveaway that the person using it is a flaming bigot.

Not to mention a dead giveaway that the person using it is obsessed with gay sex.

I would argue that the gay sex obsession was somewhat implicit in my "flaming bigot" epithet, Sadie, but it's worth noting explicitly.

@Dingojack,

Actually, according to the Xians, Jesus supposedly healed the catamite (young male sexual servant/slave) of a Roman through the love the Roman held for his male catamite. I know, I know, slavery and child abuse and all that -- of which the Bible is full, by the way.

The point her is that Christ is said to have credited the Roman with his male beloved's recovery because of love.

Okay, one of the few times that you'll see me link to my (now-defunct) blog: That Roman centurion story is from Matthew 8 (paralleled in Luke 7), and it takes a severe misreading of the Greek, a flagrant ignoring of the plain meaning of the text (which attributes the healing to the centurion's faith, not love), and - frankly - a lot of wishful thinking to come to the conclusion that "Christ...credited the Roman with his male beloved's recovery because of love." (See here for my deconstruction.)

Posted by: The Christian Cynic | August 23, 2010 12:25 AM

33

Agreed - The passages (even in a literal translation):
a) doesn't say that the young man is a catamite, merely that he was a servant, which is not uncommon even in the Roman army
b) doesn't say there was any sexual relationship between them, merely that the servant was 'highly valued'
c) Jesus was impressed by the centurion's faith*, not the love he showed the boy
It's quite a stretch to make it say anything like that. - Dingo
-----
* "Verily the centurion said 'Dude, I'm not worthy', and Jesus said to him 'Turn it up to eleven, dude!'. And it came to pass that the boy was found in health, apart from burst ear-drums, SO HE SPOKE REAL LOUD, OK?" :)

"I was in Urbana last Friday and didn't see a word on it. Either they need to advertise more or I need to pay more attention to my surroundings."

Don't know about ads, but it was on facebook...

Anyway, there were hundreds of folks there from 6-8... More than 1000 responded to the facebook invite, but I don't know total attendance. AMASONG sang (lots of folks there for that!).

A family member worked the event...didn't make it home 'til 3 am:)

What people don't realize is that it wasn't God or Jesus who said that homosexuality is an abomination. It was PAUL. If people read the Bible thoroughly, then gays would have their way.

Posted by: I attend Church | April 15, 2011 4:11 AM

"it wasn't God or Jesus who said that homosexuality is an abomination. It was PAUL."

For roman Catholics, Paul was the first pope and the representative of God on Earth, therefore *to roman catholics* they are the same.

How the other sects of Christianity (whose belief about the Pope ranges from "he's just another priest" all the way up to "he's the antichrist") come around to considering them the same is an oddity left over for someone else to explain.

However, that RC belief does give me a great idea.

One reason why Muslims insist that people should respect Mohammed and not draw cartoons is because they insist that they treat all prophets of God as respectfully, therefore Christians (whose Jesus Christ was a prophet as opposed to the Son of God according to Islamic faith) should respect Mohammed just like they respect Christ.

Which is, in fact, a rather cogent and reasonable argument.

If true.

(note: atheists should still then be allowed to take the piss out of Islam and Mohammed according to this, but they see secular governments as hiding a religious catchetism, which is rather true in the case of the USA and christianity)

So, lets see if it's true.

There are Islamic countries that have teaching Christianity (or any other heretic faiths) a crime punishable by death. The Pope should go there and preach Roman Catholicism.

If he's banned, they aren't respecting the Pope who is the prophet of God according to the RC faith and their statement on respect shown false.

If he's allowed, then the RC faith can be spread in Islamic countries as long as the prophet (Pope) says that God says it was allowed. Methodists and other sects will have to work out their own finagle.

"a) doesn't say that the young man is a catamite, merely that he was a servant, which is not uncommon even in the Roman army"

However, "blue-on-blue" sex was extremely common in the Roman army. If you're going to cite common practice, you have to remember that in the army a "shield brother" who is your lover will protect you (and you him) with greater zeal than one who is merely a compatriot.

And, too, for some cultures, it was only the veteran soldiers who were allowed to bed women. And, since they didn't want blue-balled front-line (where the new recruits went, or at least the nearly-front-line) troops to be distracted by their repressed needs, so it was considered OPERATIONALLY sensible to let them work it out on each other.

If your hangups don't revolve around sin and sex being equivalent, what is sensible to do can change markedly.
