Dispatches from the Creation Wars

Dumbass Quote of the Day

From Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa:

“Americans want and Americans deserve the real original Constitution: A strong military, lower taxes, jobs through the private enterprise, border security, no apologizing for America. And most importantly, respect for life.”

The original constitution didn’t say anything about “apologizing for America,” nor did it have any laws against abortion. Nor does the constitution have any limits on how high taxes can go, it merely gives Congress the power to tax. It also explicitly gives Congress the power to borrow money on the credit of the United States.

As for a strong military, the original constitution gives Congress the power to raise armies but it specifies that no appropriation for such a task could last longer than 2 years. That’s because many of the founding fathers were terrified of having a standing army, which they saw as a threat to liberty. Madison wrote:

A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defence against foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home. Among the Romans it was a standing maxim to excite a war, whenever a revolt was apprehended. Throughout all Europe, the armies kept up under the pretext of defending, have enslaved the people.

That’s why they preferred a system where each state had its own militia made up of citizens, which could then be called up by Congress to “suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.” So if you wish a return to the original constitution, that strong national military you favor now would be gone. But don’t let silly things like facts get in the way of your trite and empty rhetoric.
