Won't the Real Glenn Beck Please Stand Up?

Posted on: September 2, 2010 9:04 AM, by Ed Brayton

Media Matters put out a video contrasting some of Glenn Beck's self-righteous claims at his rally with some of the crazy things he's said on Fox.

The video isn't showing up for me... Can you link it in the text?

Reading stupid things he's said is just nothing compared to watching him say them. Somehow the way he talks things just makes him sound stupider with all the exaggerated gestures and eye rolls and a really hammy performance.

Better question: why won't all of those Glenn Becks please sit down and shut up?

....yes, I know. Because of the money.

He is beneath contempt. However, people who are beneath contempt and proud of it are very popular these days. There are many who would view this video and wonder what all the fuss was about.

He (and Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Savage, Palin, Bachmann, etc.) is the reason why the right has become so incredibly irrational. They consistently and constantly use misleading statements, outright lies, and fear to drive the right further into an irrational, almost frenzied state.

Glen Beck's fear-mongering continues to enjoy success creating demand for lo-volume/high-margin gold sales; "high-margin" meaning pricing above commodity pricing even for a lo-volume sale - i.e., customer is getting ripped-off even if gold prices go up since they're purchasing at above-market prices. Typically this is by gold marketers making claims to unsophisticated buyers that the form this gold takes is rare (e.g., a minted coin) and thus commands a price over commodity-pricing. It's no surprise that gold marketers remain Mr. Beck's primary sponsors given the type of gullible sheep that follow Mr. Beck who are both open to becoming fearful and susceptible to buying stuff marketed by their favorite authoritarian as a form of tribute and display of fealty to their tribe's leader.

Mr. Beck has started a news aggregator website The Blaze. Their initial and only sponsor when I first came across it a couple of days ago was a gold marketer. Today's sponsor is someone promoting Dick Armey's new book promoting the Tea Party, another sponsor who can best leverage similar marketing strategies to the same audience of suckers.

Even the most idiotic but successful radio shock-jock knows to be successful over the long haul one's shtick needs to complement a set of potential advertisers with supply that one's audience is open to purchasing. Kinda reminds me of how rock radio morning hosts continually promote Hooters. The difference is the country's interests aren't damaged when professionals favor Hooters for lunch over Appleby's.

And around here, they promote condoms, which is actually a good thing.

Slim Shady = Glenn Beck? I rather it be Eminem.

As for The Blaze, I am waiting for some radio station to call him on trademark infringement, since some use that slogan. I went to the site, and found it's run on WordPress. I am not knocking WP, since I use it for my blog and love it, but it's definitely low budget. As in free. With all of Beck's reputed millions, I would have expected a fancy-shmancy, custom designed website, not a low-budget one running an open source (socialism! collectivism! AAAGH! eleventy-one!!) blogging app.

So, either Slim Becky wants to maximize profits, or he wants to avoid losing some of his precious millions if the The Blaze goes down in flames.

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

Ed: How come YouTube embedded links always show up strange on your pages? What I see is the right most side of the video cut off, along with any buttons that would normally be at the bottom right.

Do you see the same thing? I see it on both Firefox and IE. Is this just something Scienceblogs hasn't thought of fixing, or what?

One of the most illuminating Beck reverses is his taking on the mantle of MLK on one day, and on the next repudiating MLK's liberation theology, the very same theology that he claims, without evidence, President Obama espouses.

I think this is because the video is embedded with width=640, which is too wide for the posting column which appears to be set at 512(?).

They always look fine to me.

@12: Also, I really doubt that, unlike Beck, Martin Luther KIng would have a problem with the words "social justice."

I shouldn't be watching these Glenny vids, I just don't have that many points on my IQ to spare.

One of the reasons the Tea party is so visible right now is that so many people just think it is fun to go out and declare themselves emphatic about something. Where are the liberals who want to have the same kind of fun? There could be rallies on lots of valid themes: “Take back Reason!” or “Make candidates pass a literacy test!” We are missing out on a pretty powerful tactic.

daniel rotter @ 12:

I really doubt that, unlike Beck, Martin Luther KIng would have a problem with the words "social justice."

Actually MLK's son or grandson, forgot which, wrote a piece in response to Beck's rally that referenced several passages from his father's speeches and writings ardently promoting social justice. Including his "I have a dream speech". This gentleman was making it vividly clear that what his father promoted was directly contra to Beck's cumulative positions.
