Maryland is poised to legalize same-sex marriage this week, while Hawaii is about to legalize civil unions for both gay and straight couples. Both are big steps in the right direction. The more states pass such laws through the legislative process rather than having them imposed by the courts, the better.
And guess what? The sky is not going to fall, no one is going to marry their dog or their box turtle, straight couples aren’t going to suddenly decide to divorce or not to raise kids. The world will go along just as it was, only with legal protections for families headed by gays and lesbians.
