Debate Coaches Gone Wild

Category: Mentoring
Posted on: August 14, 2008 11:20 AM, by PhysioProf

A professor at a Kansas university who dropped his pants and mooned a room full of students and teachers is under investigation after video of the incident was posted on YouTube, school officials said.

The video shows Bill Shanahan, debate coach at Fort Hays State University, in a profane, in-your-face argument with his counterpart from the University of Pittsburgh, Shanara Reid-Brinkley. The exchange took place in March at a competitive debate at Emory University in Atlanta.

From here.

PhysioProf has never been to Atlanta. Just sayin'.

UPDATE: Or Kansas!

I'm thinking that dude's debating style could use some... coaching?

Darn... That was some big argument there. What were they yelling about? Something about making them uncomfortable, or something of people caring a lot about something?

It's too bad that there is no transcript of what was being said. From the little that I could understand the argument was about racial discrimination.
The dynamics are interesting. It looked like a typical black/white confrontation that frequently disintegrates into a fight. But, despite the heated yelling, it devolved (almost) into a debate. It's also too bad that no one suggested that they turn it into a structured debate right there.

I was thinking they should have settled it like grown adults: rock, scissors, paper.

No way, the way to settle it like grown adult is to declare a thumb war.

I think they should of had a hair battle. Her extensions verses his beard. May the best follicles win!

I feel inspired. The next time I am at a meeting and things get a bit heated, I know exactly how I am going to react.

When you hear word of a young, former academic mooning at EB, that will have been me.

Oddly enough, despite the reporting, the event took place at a hotel in KS, not at Emory in Atlanta.

Really, the standards of reporting these days is falling.

I feel as if I'm risking my survival on this blog by responding to this post, especially since I was warned in the past not to deal with language issues here. That said, my take from this video has been mainly how dumbfounded and even scared the student audience appeared to be, watching their professor losing his cool and his shorts. He maybe a caring bastard about whatever issue they were debating, but in my opinion, he probably lost the respect of great many of his students. The language and the gestures he used idicate immaturity and crudeness, two characteristics that probably will cost him his job.

Wow, that's a lot different than the high-school debates I have been involved with (as a debater then judge and for a short while substitute coach). Although I have to say that a couple of times doing that would have been very cathartic.

Uh-oh. Are we not supposed to potty talk here?

(I'm a great fan of potty talk. Please tell me I don't have to remember to put the filters in before I post!)

Wait, nevermind. I just saw several instances of gratuitous cussing by PhysioProf. Whew! :)

HAHAHAH!!! No, you're just not supposed to obsessively fucking complain about it.

Is this some 'subtle' way of PP pointing out that he's not that bad?
Or is PP living vicariously through debate coaches?
