Geothermal power from Alaska

Spurr 1992

If Alaska wants to take a cue from Iceland, it might find itself with more power than it can use. That is, if the dreams of the Alaska Division of Oil and Gas come true. They are planning to lease land on Mt. Spurr and possibly Mt. Augustine for geothermal exploration. Both of these volcanoes are active, with Mt. Spurr erupting last in 1992 (famously almost taking out a KLM 747 due to volcanic ash EDIT: Oops, this was not Spurr in 1992, but Redoubt in 1989. Luckily, AVO knew to warn aviation about the Spurr eruption thanks to the lessons learned from the near disaster at Redoubt) and Augustine erupting as recently as 2006. Now, I am all for the development of geothermal energy and Alaska definitely has a lot of potential for geothermal development thanks to its abundant volcanoes along the Aleutian Islands and Cook Inlet. Now, whether I’d chose volcanoes that are (a) active and (b) potentially violent/explosive in their eruptive style is more questionable. These could be interesting cases to follow to see how we can balance the potential boon that is geothermal energy from volcanoes with the volcanic hazards posed by them – the last thing we need is to put more people in harms’ way.

Edited 6/25 to fix reference to the KLM flight incident.

Your post says the KLM plane almost went down during the Spurr eruption, but it was actually the Redoubt eruption a couple years earlier.

Thanks for pointing that out … you’re right, it was Redoubt, not Spurr. Not sure why I got confused other than the fact that they were both major eruptions in that flight path over Cook Inlet. Sorry about the confusion.

I am looking for information about the Mt. Spurr eruption sometime in 1952 – 1954, like date, period, ashfall in Anchorage and other locations.

I would love to see all of the flexibility of XPath in the CSS selector syntax. Now I’ll admit that I grew to love XPath while working with XSLT (which I think is the superior programming language for converting content to an output format) and that many people would not initially find such a syntax useful.

What we need in CSS is clear semantics for layouts. I would not expand the use of divs for this but rather create a new set of tags and associated CSS properties to handle layout that have explicit default behaviour that gives us a lot of the stability of tables with the layout usefulness that we need.

I think alot of people forget that a pure CSS layout doesn’t mean abandoning tables completely. Why do you need CSS grids? That is what tables were designed for, tabular data!

Hello, I totally disagree with your point of view and feel they ought to be lower and just wanted to thank you for your research. On a side note I fell you would like this home building online resource I found before I found yours. There is lots of great information just like this one.

He says that the firefighters told him the fire couldn’t be controlled, so by “pulling it” he means the fire fighting operation on bldg 7, taking the other firefighters out of harms way. It’s pretty clear on that clip. Doing that then let fires rage uncontrolled for hours…leading to failure. But its more fun to think its a conspiracy maaaaan. Right?
