Eruptions

New webcam at Redoubt

A quick note (as I’m buried in zircon): The Alaska Volcano Observatory has installed a webcam at Redoubt to monitor for an eruption. It is a little cloudy today (not the image above), so not much can be seen, but who knows, maybe you can catch the volcano in action if it erupts. The status remains at Orange (heightened risk of eruption) and AVO will monitor the volcano around the clock until things change (eruption or return to background).

UPDATE (11:34 AM): Just as I posted this, I saw a very brief article that mentions something I hadn’t heard before: AVO has noted some muddy debris flows along the glacier that is downslope of the summit. This might suggest that things are getting warmer near the vent as the magma ascends in the edifice. Things might begin to move quickly at Redoubt.

I have tried several different ways to see a webcam of the mountain and I keep getting the “Page not found – connection failure.” message. I have linked through your blog, the AVO, cnn, even Fox news. Is there a webcam still in operation?

Looks like all the interest in Redoubt has crippled the AVO servers, per this headline on the Redoubt page:

Due to very high load on our web server, we can only support a very limited website. We are working to remedy the situation as quickly as possible. Thanks!

All this for yet another Aleutian eruption? Wow.

I own a cannery about 20 miles south of Redoubt. Should I be worried?

Ellijah, I would definitely contact your local officials to find out what their plans are if an eruption occurs. 20 miles is close to the volcano but the effects you may feel will depend on the style and nature of the eruption.

Interesting site with information on Alaskan volcanoes.

Not listed in your blog roll but some may not be aware of it.

geokem home page is apparently http://www.geokem.com/Andesite-2.html but moving from one page to another requires tweaking the URL.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  11. I believe one of your commercials triggered my internet browser to resize, you may well want to put that on your blacklist.
