An apology...? Not if I ruled the universe.

The reaction to the news that the Irish Catholic Church covered up (thus encouraged) the molestation and rape of children is odd.

At least odd to me.

Apologize? Quit using the titles 'Father' and 'Your Grace'?

Really?

The people involved in this disgusting tragedy (perpetrators and those who protected them) should only have two real options.
1-- Spend their remaining lives and the entire fortune of the Catholic Church to right this wrong. Sell the Vatican for whatever you can get for it. Spend all the Churches $$ and all of their man-(nun)-power on the victims of abuse, and any suffering child on this planet. Buy vaccines for every child on Earth. Build schools and housing for every AIDS orphan in Africa. No proselytizing, no naming the buildings 'POPE ORPHANAGE!', the Church can get nothing for these efforts, except whats the word? Atonement? They have wronged humanity. They must make it right.

2-- If the perps lack the desire or ability to do #1, then they should kill themselves. Not only have they ruined thousands (+?) of lives, they have desecrated the name of their God and their church to a magnitude no atheist could dream of achieving. They are worth less than nothing to humanity, and theyve dishonored their God. Thus their only option is death. I dont care how. Neither should they.

But, they have three options, dont they?
3-- Do nothing.

3. Report to the CDF then do nothing or be excommunicated.*

I hate the CDF. They have every ding dong with a collar convinced of some sort of medieval diplomatic immunity. Yet they will be the first to flip out over some creepy old Mullah marrying a half dozen nine year olds.

"Do nothing" is in some ways the most honest choice for them. They obviously thought it was the right thing to do before they were caught. Doing anything now would just be hypocrisy.

No dear,
they have a fourth option, be proud of how they handled this minor problem in front of the catholic community, to preserve the CHURCH as much as possible.

They are proud, me thinks.

I'd like it if for a start they prosecuted according the laws the governs everyfuckingone else.

William,

The main difference between the three scum you linked to and the RCC is that the schools did not try to actively cover up the molesters in question and the church officials did.

If it was an atheist organisation perpetrating and covering up those crimes, the death penalty or at least severe criminal charges would be considered by the righteous religious.

Spot on!

The Vatican has played a shell game hiding these child rapists by moving them from parish to parish and country to country. Since the paedo-priest scandal broke, they've attempted to mask their actions by thowing up a smokescreen of phony moral outrage against the gays, the non-believers, and the women who feel they have a right to make choices about their own bodies.

Some years ago a colleague who was an avid fly tying fisherman died. As part of his memorial ceremony, our advisor (we were both DeVore's students) put on display a display box of his flies. One of the flies had been captured and tied up by a spider

William, you dumb dick, Houghton is a Christian university affiliated with the Wesleyan denomination. So your point is that we should extend Abby's options to evangelical Protestants as well?

Sarah Silverman is wrong. Don't sell the Vatican -- send a couple of squadrons of Carabinieri in to shred the Lateran treaty, and then hand sovereignty over to a few countries with grudges. I'm sure Catholics in the US, Ireland, Canada, and Austria might like a whack, along with Native Americans of all American countries...

My local priest did more for the cause of atheism than PZ Myers in some ways: he certainly made me realise that even he didn't believe the crap he was doling out, because if he had he probably wouldn't be blowing the altarboys. His case broke recently, but everyone my age knew what was going on way back then.
