If we're made in Gods image, God's made of gag, pol, and env.
I'm a graduate student studying the molecular and biochemical evolution of HIV within patients and within populations. I also study epigenetic control of ERVs.

Twelve solid hours of ten-minute talks? Methinks the organizers are indulging in a bit of survival-of-the-fittest as well.

Wow, that sounds like a fun day. Wish I lived closer. :(
Any chance we might get some audio or video of the speeches?

have a great time! Wish they were web-casting - I'm grading papers

That is a lot of evolution for one day. Have fun! I wish I could be there. Is there going to be free food available?
Posted by: Travis | November 2, 2009 10:52 AM
Sounds fun, Wish I could be there. I'm not scheduled to be back out to OK until April though. Maybe there will be something interesting going on then? (plz, plz, plz!) Hope your talk goes well.
Cheers,
Ray

The Bride and I will float in and out but Abbie at 6:30 A.M. ...sheesh I'll leave that time slot to clean living stalkers like Rho. We love you ERV but that will throw off the Boston Terrier's poop schedule.
I saw Laurie Vitt the magnificent snake lady was on the program. Where is Michael Mares? I thought he would throw in ten minutes just to tell the Comparative Religion people and P.Z. to suck it.

LOL, wat? Im speaking tonight at 6.30, not this morning!

Since many of you were kind enough to come out to the recent Meyer and Meyer-Wells events, I wanted to inform you that David Berlinski is coming to the OU Union on 09Nov from 7-9 pm.
Anyone is welcome of course. Love to see you there!
Sorry for the pop-in pop-out nature of this comment.
Peace,
Rhology

Aha. My dumb. The bride told me it was starting at 8:15 in the evening.
I thought it was going to be some sort of tag team stamina event....like marathon ballroom dancing with lecterns!
In that case it is less exiting but far more accessible. We will probably catch your talk.

Hope the event went well. I can't see the schedule now as it seems your photobucket account has run out of steam. Of course a continuous stream of evolution talks would start off with a small number of subjects and then branch out into more and more areas with speakers occasionally passing each other notes or even going over the scripts they have already.

"...evilution..."
Finally, truth in advertising.

We already know how much you care for truth, Wall-lies, and how much you understand about oh, science, or humour, or honesty ... Save it for hell, bill.

"Finally, truth in advertising."
If you aren't already familiar with that bit of creofag (and sometimes anti-creofag) slang, you should an hero for great justice.

You have no frame of reference here, Willy Wally. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie...
Posted by: Optimus Primate | November 3, 2009 10:42 AM
WOW, Abbie, your talk was awesome. Sounds like your research is on the right track. Are you coming down for Janet Browne on Thursday?
Posted by: dhough | November 3, 2009 12:37 PM
Aah! Willy Wally probably thought he caught a typo.

Abbie did give an excellent talk. I attended most of the day - a real relay of speakers from diverse departments on many subjects of evolution. All stayed within their time limits (remarkable!) and gave clear presentations understandable to a general audience. I even gave a talk (added late) on adaptations of the World's largest frog (Conraua goliath). I learned a lot from the talks and I am sure many others did as well. The audience came and went as schedules allowed, but there were many students in attendance, but few creationist types. Even Wee Willy MAY have lerned something about evolution? Naww, his mind seems to be closed to new information.

Hi Daniel (and thanks vic!)!
Im glad it came out well! You all are literally the only outside people I have told about my research (minus 99% of the details) for fear of being scooped ;)

Hey, you're getting enough traffic to Pharyngulate your own links now. Congratulations on hitting the big time.

How do you expect "evolution" to occur before your very eyes? Doesn't "evolution" takes billions of years?
In any case, the little pet project you are conduction proves nothing. You start with a virus you end witn a virus. period. Nothing chnaged. of course viruses change and become resistant to medications. So what? That is adaptation, not evolution. You didn;t turn a swine flu virus into a pig through evolution did you? Of course not, a virus is and always will be just that, a virus. Evolution is impossible.
Ceetain chnaged occur within species wchich is known as adaptation. Example. A horse, donkey, and zebra are all three different species of the same kind of animal. Nothing will chnage that. Nothing. That is not evolution, but adaptation.
Dogs, wolves, foxes, coyotes are different adaptations of the same kind of animal. Nothing will ever change the fact that they all orginated from a single pair of canines and through adapatation, different species were born. That is not evolution.
Evolution is for the weak minded.
