My frustration with this sort of discussion - Chu-Carroll, DeTurck, the whole lot of them - is the naive belief that their own personal experiences and intuitions can answer a question like this. There's no doubt a tremendous body of cognitive research about the various ways different people learn and understand math. How can we leverage that to figure out the best and most useful way to teach math to kids?
