AT THE CONVERGENCE OF EVOLUTION AND GENETICS

About evolgen

side_view_toon_small.JPG We talk about molecular population and evolutionary GENETICS and GENOMICS. You know, the caliper measurement of a gene's evolvability in moles.

Eschewing obfuscation ever since Morgan.

Michael Ashburner

Category: DrosophilaGenomics
Posted on: May 16, 2006 1:27 PM, by RPM

Michael Ashburner has written a book. No, not that book. This one's a bit smaller, less expensive, and about the sequencing of the Drosophila melanogaster genome. You can read a review of the book here and buy it from here. It's not The Genome War; Matt Ridley describes it as Ashburner's "immediate reactions, mostly committed to paper at the time -- an idiosyncratic, gonzo romp through the crazy days of 1998-99."

In his review, Ridley describes Ashburner's dislikes, joys, and vices:

Being a scientist, Ashburner hates hotels (especially Marriotts), Microsoft, bad coffee and suits -- the ones who negotiate on behalf of Celera. He likes or needs sushi, espresso, Lewis Carroll, beer and bouts of bird-watching.

He left off one item obvious to anyone who has spent any time with Michael Ashburner: smoking. The dude's a frickin' chimney.
