Commentary on the Endless Dispute Between Evolution and Creationism

Profile

Jason Rosenhouse received his PhD in mathematics from Dartmouth College in 2000. He subsequently spent three years as a post-doc at Kansas State University. Observing the machinations of the Kansas Board of Education led to his unhealthy obsession with issues related to evolution and creationism. Currently he is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, VA.

Math Bloggers Sought

Category: Mathematics
Posted on: January 19, 2007 3:51 PM, by Jason Rosenhouse

I'd like to put together a comprehensive list of math bloggers. By this I mean either anyone who regularly blogs about mathematics, or professional mathematicians who blog (on any subject). The only two that I that I read regularly are Good Math, Bad Math and Polymathematics, but I have no doubt there are many others out there. I suspect there's a lot of good math stuff being posted that I'm missing. So if you know of any good ones, perhaps you could let me know about them in the comments. Thanks!

Lots of math, physics and philosophy content flows through The n-Category Cafe, which is hosted by John Baez, David Corfield and Urs Schreiber. Try following links from there.

I agree with Blake Stacey on that recommendation, plus John Baez's own -- allegedly the first blog ever.

Also: Ars Mathematica.

Math sometimes on Not Even Wrong.

My own blog, which has been long since updating:

Jacques Distler, whose server hosts The n-Category Cafe, also provides an aggregator, Planet Musings, which delivers a steady river of physics news by pouring thirty-eight physics blogs together. It also lets you subscribe to one syndication feed to get all the blogs. I wonder if something similar could be done for math, not to mention general skepticism.

My blog, Growth Rate n lg n is more computer science oriented, but involves lots of pretty math. Just tossing it out there.

I found this: eserod.googlepages.com

It doesn't look like a blog but it looks interesting. It is constructed under a different math focus.

Pretty much interesting.

Abstract Nonsense, by Alon Levy, is a pretty good math blog. I don't understand half the stuff he blogs about, but it's pretty damned interesting and he looks like he definitely knows his stuff: http://abstractnonsense.wordpress.com/

Some that I read are Antopology (which hasn't been updated in a while) and a couple with a more type theoretic/functional programming bent: A Neighborhood of Infinity and The Comonad.Reader.

Together with my colleague Ionica Smeets I write a weblog on mathematics: www.wiskundemeisjes.nl ("wiskundemeisjes" means "math girls" in Dutch). We are PhD students in mathematics, trying to show the rest of the world how much fun maths can be! Unfortunately, we write in Dutch only, but you might like some jokes, videos or poems in English.

We are interested in your list, since we don't know many math blogs ourselves.

Halfway There. Zenoferox is even more of a generalist than I am, but he still has some good math and math education posts.

My blog, http://absolutely-regular.blogspot.com/
is mostly devoted to mathematical research. I also recommend Alexandre Borovik's blog:

Have you checked out PostGenomic? It seems to be shaping up to a Technorati which works, covering blogs and papers, even indexing other websites which have been linked by science blogs (like the Pensacola News Journal, thanks to "Dr. Dino" getting ten years in prison). This could be useful and fun.

John Armstrong has recently started The Unapologetic Mathematician. I seem to be the first to have commented, but he's saying good stuff, so I'm sure others will join in soon!
