Evolving Thoughts

One man's struggle against impermanence

Profile

Grumpy John Wilkins is an aged, eternal student, who thinks philosophy of biology is at least as interesting as politics or sport and twice as important. He has a PhD from the University of Melbourne and a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Queensland, in Australia. After a varied career, involving factories, gardening, civil service, publishing, graphics, public relations but not, unfortunately for the CV, driving a truck, John finally completed his thesis on species concepts, which he is working into two books. One has been accepted for publication, and will come out in 2008; the other may be contracted soon. He is also interested in cultural evolution, philosophy of religion, Macintosh computers and his kids (they sort of make it a necessity, you know?).

If anyone knows of a tenurable, or even medium term, job in philosophy of biology, let me know. Have library, will travel. The contract runs out soon...

This blog is designed to host any random thoughts that happen to be passing through my forebrain at a given moment. So there will be errors...

By the end of today, we will have over 200,000 visits to Evolving Thoughts. That's in not quite two years, ever since PZ Myers outed me back in June 2004. On average around 5000 visits and 8000 page reads a week. Assuming nobody visits more than once a day, that's a thousand readers. PZ might sneer at such low figures, but then I don't try to earn a second income from blogging, and besides, I try to steer clear of politics, which is where the audience is. So to you faithful 1000, thanks! Most philosophers would kill for an audience of that size.

You're funny. You've got to post mainstream and mindless junk to get millions of visitors to your site.

The juxtaposition of "Administrative" and "Humor" in the Categories line is worth the price of admission. :)

If it's about me (and my blog) then humour is of course inevitable...

Only 233 to go...

May I suggest that this is a good spot for lurkers to de-lurk, and explain exactly why they read this blog?

204 to go.

Um, why do I read this blog? To try and understand what this thing called fillosofe is and what it is useful for.

Why do I keep coming back? Cause I haven't found the answer yet.

Mr Wilkins in reality we only keep coming back in the hope that you will make a really big mistake so that we can all shit on your head. Unfortunately you go on consistently producing interesting, informative, entertaining and humourous articles with a very high readabilty factor. Don't worry you'll slip up one day and then we'll get you!

Wow! Two years. Congratulations. Judging by your picture you haven't aged a day.

I like the new banner, BTW.

Why do I read this blog? Because I'd like to see how the Australian-philosopher-agnostic-adaptionist minds works (still waiting). That, and the fact that my aggregator keeps spewing out posts from John at me.

The irony of Thony saying I don't make mistakes being followed immediately by Larry doesn't escape me, you know...

Larry, you forgot -appeaser-: and I'm giving a talk to the local student philosophy club about Dawkins book in the next month or so. So many minds to corrupt, so little time.

Most philosophers would kill ...

I'll have to think about this a bit ... I knew that they sang and played soccer, but this is something new ...

I was glad to see John finally got a blog, now we see some serious output from him. It was funny to see him enter a thread on t.o, and it would quickly deteriorate into a pun-fest. The creo-loons couldn't handle the humor. And I don't hold it against him, at all, that his law firm, "Snatchit, Grabit & Run", tried to extort a nickel every time I used the term IDiot. Thank zeus they didn't have jurisdiction in the U.S. Or was it catshark's threat of a countersuit.

Wouldn't it cause a bit less confusion if we all called ourselves "bruce"?

I own the rights to IDevotee (and Evotee for the Other Guys), but the lawyers, you know? Smelled money and there was no controlling them.

And there is only, to my knowledge one Australian philosopher named Bruce...

I scanned his bio. So is nobody responsible for the sheep-dip these days?

"And there is only, to my knowledge one Australian philosopher named Bruce..."

But is his wife called Sheila?

I have to admit I come several times a day some of the times... Usually I have a very fast lurk-and-run attitude, and I come back at evening to read things I remember hooked my attention during the day (but sort of a squirrel I don't always remember the nuts and still come back even later).

As to why I read this blog is reminiscent from an old t.o. compulsive reading behaviour, and also to make sure John hasn't already been writing on things poping in my mind... :-)

Why do I read this blog? Honestly?

For original, thoughtful, accessible philosophical writing. Also for a freethinking perspective that's more sophisticated than "RELIGION IS DUMB LOLZ DELUSIONAL BRONZE AGE SHEPHERD MYTH AMERICAN TALIBAN!"

Hmm ... assuming that "poping" is a typo (and if it is, it's an interesting one), I'm not sure I really want to know whether you meant "popping" or "pooping." :-)

For that matter, I'm not sure I should have spoken up ...

Okay, that's my quota of hits for the day.

Do you suppose this month's check will be on time?

Does that include those of us who follow the blog via RSS readers, and rarely need click through to the site? If not, you're probably lowballing your numbers quite a bit.

Maybe you have a future there with rhetoric like that :)

You know, I have no idea if RSS feeds get tracked that way. But then I put content under the fold to make you read me online... BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

John, you make philosophy fun and exciting (for this nerd anyway) and that's no small achievement. Oh, I should add you also demonstrate the pragmatic, useful side of philosophy -- keep that up!
