John Wilkins is an eternal student, who thinks philosophy of biology is at least as interesting as politics or sport and twice as important. He has a PhD from the University of Melbourne and worked at the University of Queensland, in Australia, before taking up a research fellowship at the University of Sydney. After a varied career, involving factories, gardening, civil service, publishing, graphics, public relations but not, unfortunately for the CV, driving a truck, John finally completed his thesis on species concepts in 2004, which he has worked into two books.

This blog is designed evolved to host any random thoughts that happen to be passing through my forebrain at a given moment. So there will be errors...

Microbial species paper accepted

Category: Philosophy of ScienceSpecies and systematics
Posted on: May 25, 2007 10:48 PM, by John S. Wilkins

Do you remember a series of posts I did on microbial species? Well it evolved into a paper that has just been accepted, with some very constructive criticisms by a reviewer, for History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences. I thank all my commenters for suggestions and help.

This paper had a rough history - it was supposed to be included in another journal's special edition but the editor and reviewers seemed not to get the point of it (and, to be fair, a lot of the early drafts were a bit sloppy). But in the revision process I worked out some clearer ideas than I started with, and I am now a partisan for a current species "concept" - Alan Templeton's cohesion concept.

Congratulations. Would you comment on the role working over these ideas on the blog played?

It helped me clarify my ideas enormously, but then that is a major reason for this blog. You all think I'm here to entertain you lot. It's actually the other way about...
