Interregnum

Because I have to hand back my laptop to my present employer, and my future employer won't have a Mac for me before mid-January or later, I may not be able to post much for a while. I do have access to a desktop PC, but what can one really do with that sort of SNAFU technology anyway? I may get a loan of an old G4, but that won't run some of my software.

So nobody play Mornington Crescent while I'm gone, OK? Enjoy the surfeit of food if you have access to it, and survive the family reunions.

More like this

There's always Ubuntu/Kubuntu or Knoppix. Either should largely de-SNAFU sufficiently, at least until you get another Mac (or just convert to Slackware, whatever...)

Then you will not see me wish you a Happy Chanukah and hope that you find plenty of [fill in here] to sacrifice for the Solstice.

Actually, a G4 can run a lot of software. Leopard for one, and any software compatible with Leopard that are also universal applications.

There are G5s and MacTels going used for a low price, so keep your eyes open for one of them. But focus on MacTels, Apple appears to be switching over entirely to Intel these days.

Happy Monkey.

Thanks Alan, but on my salary, I need my employer to buy my computer. I am not well off. Even to buy a secondhand laptop.

Susan, I will look for as much [fill in here] as I can find. Thanks. Same back at you and yours...

Ask Hogfather for one of those new 15 inch MacBooks. There's always hope.

Have a good Solstice Season and good luck with the new job.

John,

Are you making less than $991.00 US? If you aren't, open a PayPal account and put a bit aside every month. Not that you'll get a lot in interest payments, but withdrawing money from your account is such a pain you'll only do it for important purchases. It means doing without, but if getting a Mac of your own is vital enough you'll find things to do without.

Off topic, and I apologise for that but I thought maybe people on this list would be interested by this if you haven't seen it already.

THE Federal Government's controversial internet censorship plan may extend to filter more web activity than first thought, Broadband Minister Stephen Conroy revealed today.

In a post on his department's blog, Senator Conroy today said technology that could filter data sent directly between computers would be tested as part of the upcoming live filtering trial.

I'm aware of it but I have spent the whole day getting the loaner G4 working. I'll blog on it tonight, after I get interviewed by Rhys Muldoon for the ABC ;-)

I was listening to the ABC earlier and they said Mr Conroy wasnt available for questions.
Right,we are essentially adopting China-style Internet filtering, the minister can get away with just not saying anything about it,and the media ignores the issue...What a sad country !

I was listening to the ABC earlier and they said Mr Conroy wasnt available for questions.

One can only assume that the Australian government was filtering Mr Conroy's content, as it was deemed unsuitable.

Well my radio interview last night went well. Rhys Muldoon, the interviewer, is a friendly sort and he was genuinely interested in the history of philosophy. My friend Margie, who put this onto me as the sole philosopher who remained contactable in Australia, said I did alright.

I'll post something about the filter, which now includes peer-to-peer (what's next, email?) later today.
