Another materialist young female celebrity below the fold….

Quote:

Of her religion, Portman says, “I’m much more like the product of a doctor than I am a Jew.” She is uncomfortable about the concept of the afterlife. “I don’t believe in that. I believe this is it, and I believe it’s the best way to live.”

The nice thing about being jewish is that you can remove all of the god bullshit and old-testament crap and still maintain a lot of the cultural identity (ie, it’s possible to be an atheist jew). The concept of an afterlife in judaism is fairly unclear — my rabbi described it as a dry cleaning service for souls as they wait for the messiah. In fact, you could argue that reformed judaism is an “atheistic religion”. Of course, orthodox jews and hassids would say that reformed jews aren’t really jews. I still identify myself as a jew even though I have no belief in god.

P.S. I so wish I was that chimp.

rpm, ever heard of a third generation reformed? :) in general you are right, though i think if you remove adonai from the jew over the long term the chances that jews would become absorbed into the goyim.

See how manly & dangerous Angelina looks when juxtaposed w/ Audrey Hepburn lookalike Natalie Portman? She’s a total cutie w/ the short pixie hair. Yum!!

For the record, you can be an atheist Buddhist, too — or even a Catholic one, if you really want to. But really wanting anything isn’t very Buddhist.

not for the catholic. at least if you believe that to be a catholic you have to follow the catechism…though i guess that’s part of your point….

Natalie might be easy on the eyes, but she revealed on Saturday Night Live that she drinks, does drugs, kills dogs, and cheated at College. This is what happens when you reject God and descend into a world of depravity!!!!11

Here’s Scarlet Johansson on Oscar acceptance speeches:

“They can be so goofy, like the ones where they say, “I’d like to thank our Lord Jesus up above!” I’m like, “For the love of God, keep your mouth shut. That’s why the world is so fucked up, because God is focusing solely on your career.”

    (Sigh….)

hey…thanks for the link to celebatheists…the list on the main wiki page lists lance armstrong (i’m a fan), and his page was pretty cool…i didn’t know he was an atheist…the best part was his quote at the end – “If there was a god, I’d still have both nuts”

Ted Williams – One of us – Known for his belief in The Science of Hitting and the last to hit .400. Stephen J Gould wrote an essay about why there will never be a .400 hitter again. I may have grown up a Yankeee fan, but you have to give Teddy his props. A hell of a hitter, and an atheist too!

I like the assumption that if your not Christian, your materialistic. Funny how traditional christian societies are the most materialistic on the planet. Hedging bets on an afterlife and assuming a moral superiority is nuts. Nothing in the 10 commandments is alien to any decent human being- or the beliefs of a secular society.
