Okay, I've slightly missed the main New Year's resolution bandwagon. But the beginning of February will mark the first anniversary of my move to ScienceBlogs, so I figure I have a whole month in which to be self-indulgent reflective and renewal-minded. And I've been thinking of starting my personal calendar year on National Pie Day, anyway.
So here are my blog-related resolutions for 2009:
- Update my blog roll
- Purge all my to-blog folders and half-written drafts. I think 2008 was an especially bad year for letting ideas languish - knowing that potential employers are reading, I've been turning simple entries into elaborate theses: relevant, engaging, simultaneously broad and detailed, and impossible to complete in a sane or timely manner. Also, my inner censor has been working overtime and with exceptional vigor.
- Be more conscious of which ideas are blog-sized, and which are not. NB: If you think it's a simple question, it is probably the subject of several intersecting subfields; literature reviews are not blog-sized.
- When infatuated with a big idea, figure out a single blog-sized chunk, and post about it. Repeat until distracted by the next shiny object.
- Get a nice banner image already!
- Figure out how to automate a weekly or bi-weekly link post.
During January, I will be posting the most interesting of my half-finished pieces, as is; maybe they'll generate more discussion in their scatterbrained state than they would have in a more polished form.

A to-blog folder is a really good idea. I've just got a "blog" folder, but it's gotten really big and I don't label things very well, and now I can't figure out which files are were completed and posted, and which are partially finished drafts. So I've got this big folder of files that I'm scared to open.

Maria, do you keep to-blog folders as text written on your computer, or somehow keep it online? I guess, then, that you write your posts in a word program? My drafts are usually stored willy nilly in blogger. Most are pretty out of date!
