“We are Doomed if Huckabee is Elected”

It is interesting to see words like “doomed” and “ruined” in the context of the current election cycle in the US. Many of us had those words in our minds and on our lips during the last two election cycles. I wonder if the rhetoric of doom, which is largely accurate, will be more over this time around.

“The logic that convinces us that evolution is a fact is the same logic we use to say smoking is hazardous to your health or we have serious energy policy issues because of global warming,” University of Michigan professor Gilbert Omenn told reporters at the launch of a book on evolution by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).

“I would worry that a president who didn’t believe in the evolution arguments wouldn’t believe in those other arguments either. This is a way of leading our country to ruin,” added Omenn, who was part of a panel of experts at the launch of “Science, Evolution and Creationism.” [AFP]

If Huckabee is elected, I wouldn’t say that we’re “doomed.” I would say that our competitiveness in biotechnology is likely to take a hit that it is unlikely to recover from, because Huckabee would likely continue Bush’s policy on government support of stem cell research.

FWIW, at least one e-mail list to which I belong, has a moderator that claims Huckabee is essentially unelectable. The moderator’s position is that the “powers-that-be” in the Republican Party will not allow a Huckabee nomination, even if the religious far right wants to call the shots here. I cannot say whether or not this is true, but even if Huckabee is nominated, I think there will be a lot of people who will be scared into supporting whoever becomes the Democratic nominee(I have my preferences about that, but I won’t go into them at this time).

While I hope Anne is right, I can recall feeling that way in 2000. I couldn’t imagine how anyone would vote for a buffoon like Bush. I couldn’t imagine how anyone from the pro-business Republican party would really support a guy who had run 7 companies into bankruptcy. I couldn’t imagine how any religious people could support someone with such an obviously fake “conversion”. In hindsight, I was painfully naive. Bush had a faux “likability” – Huckabee is actually likable. Bush had fake religion and a fake grassroots appeal – Huckabee is the real thing.

I really think that Huckabee is electable. And that’s a scary thought.
