Arthur Clarke’s Questions

On March 19, the prolific British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke died at age 90. At his 90th birthday party, in December, Clarke made three wishes: for the world to embrace cleaner energy resources, for a lasting peace in his adopted home, Sri Lanka, and for evidence of extraterrestrial beings. So…Which of Clarke’s three wishes do you think will happen first?

This is the question being asked in our latest Reader Poll. Here.

What if all three happen at the same time, i.e. aliens land, sell us all sorts of clean energy technology and bring about world peace? They’re all improbable occurrences so they could just as easily happen together as separately, right?

    Romeo, shhhh….

(we don’t want people to know. But yes, I’m sure you are right. They will be landing in Sri Lanka. Obviously).

What if mankind becomes extinct before any of the above?

What I noticed immediately is that people think there’s more chance we’ll find aliens that there is is chance of peace in Sri Lanka.

    That’s kind of depressing…

In case you haven’t noticed yet, here’s the last interview:

BTW, Clarke wasn’t the first person to think about the geostationary orbit.

Clarke’s idea was to use manned communication satellites, where the operators would decide what material was worthy of being distributed globally. So he also invented Internet censorship.
