Gods, Ads and Robots

Category: ReligionRobots
Posted on: March 17, 2008 9:04 PM, by Greg Laden

image.jpgThe story is about a girl born with four eyes and two faces, in India (I suppose, two eyes per face). She might, according to some, be a reincarnation of the God Ganesha. I strongly suspect not. She probably will be the victim of the usual unsavory attention by the press, and the insane speculation that her (or, possibly, their) abnormality is a godly manifestation.

But what I wanted to show you is the odd juxtaposition of this story, reported on Physorg.com, and the ads that went up with it. Here is the headline and the featured paid adverts:

bad_ads.jpg

This is a typical outcome of the way ads are placed these days on the internet. I can write a Ben Stein Bashing post on my old site, and be guaranteed that Ben Stein will have to pay to have an ad placed next to it. Lately, several Scienceblogs.com bloggers have noticed that their sites are riddled with ads that are absurd given the context ... Woo-hawking on an anti-Woo site, creationism on a pro Science and Evolution site, and so on.

This particular example, extolling the virtues of an outstanding baby photographer joined with voyeuristic news of the latest freaky baby from India, takes the cake, however.

Oh, wait, did I use "freaky" and "cake" in the same sentence?

Oh, and notice the robots. Why robots????

Speaking of robots, check out this toy dancing robot that fits in the palm of your hand:

This cute little wind-up robot dances better than I do and costs about $10.50. You just wind him up and away he goes, breaking it down with moves that make me jealous. How could he not brighten up your mood? I think it's just the thing I need to add some flair to my cubicle and make me laugh while the boss is busy pissing all over me. Which, until recently, he used to only do figuratively.

I got "Easter Gifts for Infants" when I looked at the rest of the article, which is its own several kinds of wrong.

I dunno, the one they had on the Log a couple of years ago (Where's the Beef?) is pretty good. (Ruth's Chris Steakhouse next to a story headlined Aztecs Butchered, Ate Spanish Invaders)
