PZ Myers Expelled, Gains Sainthood

Posted on: March 21, 2008 12:12 PM, by Greg Laden

As you have undoubtedly heard, a group of evolutionary biologists and evolutionary biology supporters attended a showing of the movie Expelled, in the Twin Cities, last night. This group included the very famous Richard Dawkins and the only slightly less famous PZ Myers. PZ and Richard, in fact, were together in line, along with PZ's spouse, a daughter, and a future son in law. Other evolution supporters and at least one local evolutionary-type blogger were also in line.

While waiting in line and minding their own business, PZ was spotted by the Expelled! production staff, and EXPELLED from the theater!!!! Richard Dawkins and the others were not picked up by this anti-truth security dragnet, and were able to attend the show.

So we have this:

LOL_PZ_Myers_Expelled.jpg

vs this:

LOL_Richard_Dawkins_Not_Expelled.jpg

This could not have gone better if Myers and Dawkins had planned it. This absurd move on the part of Expelled producers, along with various internet accounts by Creationist Christian Yahoos that give patently false descriptions of the event, belie the deeply smarmy nature of American Creationist Cultism.

Later that evening, a film was made in a Minneapolis Hotel Room, staring PZ Myers and Richard Dawkins. By all accounts, this film is much better produced than Expelled!. The film can be seen here.

The internet is abuzz with this event. The following is a list of all of the posts I know of on the internet about this event. If you feel that I am missing something, email me!

Dawkins has written a review of the film, calle Lying for Jesus?

The entries below include eye witness accounts of the event, news coverage in major outlets including the New York Times, and blog commentary. I have not included creationist apologist posts. Sorry, not on my blog! (But there is really very little of that out there, amazingly).

Enjoy!

Don't you find Overstreet's standard of fairness commendable? After numerous commenters pointed out Stuart Blessman's own words are contradictory, so that he is most certainly not being entirely truthful, Overstreet dismisses these as "opinions" of people who have "faith" because they were not present themselves.

In case it gets missed, here is Genie Scott, in the Pharyngula comments:

Well, PZ, at least you got registered and accepted for the program.

I registered for the local East Bay showing (site unannounced) more than three weeks ago, and received my automated reply on February 28 saying I would be emailed "a confirmation once the screening is confirmed".

They now know the screening will be in Danville. The web page says the Danville screening is "full", yet others I know received confirmations weeks ago, while my inbox remains empty.

I fear I have been *pre*Expelled!

Does anyone who is confirmed for Danville want to take me as a guest? I assure you, I am very well behaved. I am a mild-mannered, gray-haired lady who like PZ is "Minnesota nice."

But I *would* like to know why Mark Mathis told both of us a month after Premise Media secured the domain name "www.expelledthemovie.com" that the name of the movie was "Crossroads." Was Premise lying to Mark or was Mark lying to us?

http://www.evolutionnews.org/2008/03/richard_dawkins_worlds_most_fa.html#more

There is a growing fear by the producers that Darwinists may be trying get into the showings to make bootleg copies (for the Web?), possibly in hopes of damaging the commercial value. Others may be crashing because they want to trash it before it even gets reviewed by the media. P.Z. Myers, who was not let into a showing last night in Minnesota, probably falls in the latter category.

Amazingly, the best selling Oxford scientist/author Richard Dawkins also crashed a showing of Expelled in Minnesota last night and he not only was let in, but introduced at the end of the showing.

Dawkins apparently acknowledged that he had not been invited and did not have a ticket. A sophomoric side to his ideological campaign is thus revealed.

Keep them coming, I'll keep checking this and my email and updating regularly.

In a day or two, I'll reformat this mess and make it all pretty, alphabetical, whatever seems appropriate.

I don't understand why the Wikipedia entry on the movie refers only to these wishy wishy press pieces, and not to any of the first hand accounts on the internet, or to this compendium of links!!!

There are Irony people at Wikipedia who do not want Expelled in the entry. Somebody has to go back and put it in, right? Is that how it workrs?

But hey, don't make trouble. If the police grab you just GO LIMP GO LIMP... You've all had your training, REMEMBER YOUR TRAINING.

New Scientist has a review of Expelled.. Money quote:

Throughout the entire experience, Maggie and I couldn't help feeling that the polarised audience in the theater was a sort of microcosm of America, and let me tell you - it's a scary place. I also couldn't help thinking that the intelligent design folks aren't being silenced, so much as they're being silent. Because when it comes to actually explaining anything, they've got nothing to say.

"Questions have been raised about the origination of some of the animation used in our movie EXPELLED: No Intelligence Allowed. Claims that we have used any animation in an unauthorized manner are simply false. Premise Media created the animation that illustrates cellular activity used in our film."

I read your comments about Dawkins sneaking in and Meyers being expelled.Seems to me that someone like yourself should be intelligent enough to know the difference between an invite only prescreening and the normal pay to view.It is not only unethical to crash a party,os to sneak into an invite only event uninvited, but it is also tresspassing. If these two were to pay to get in,they would be as welcome as anyone else.So top call the Expelled croud hypocrits,is either incredibly stupid.(which i doubt you are,a bit misguided maybe.)Or you, like so many othersare willing to lie through your teeth to demonize othere who disagree with you. It's not that you are stupid, just morally bankrupt.
Unlike your crowd, the ID crowd is not trying to silence anybody, just be allowd to pose questions, and have all reasonable possibilities open for free thinkers to be able to weigh all of the evidence, and make up their own minds.

It has been evident that the fascists in this country are not the religious right,or even agnostics,But the athiests who have been forcing their views down everyones throats for the past 40 or 50 years, any way they can, specifically by silencing any opposing views.and of course,by arrogantly insinuating that those who disagree are simply not as intellegent,or somehow mentally ill.

If the case for Darwinism is so strong,Then why is there a need to silence any opposing positions?unless you believe that the average person is not intellegent enough to understand science,in which case, you are not only arrogant, but bigoted.

Posted by: Douglas W page | April 15, 2008 9:11 PM

Douglas,
Myers did not try to sneak in. You must not have heard that there was no fee for entrance to the event from which Myers was Expelled. It was not invite-only. Individuals were able to sign up in advance, which Myers did. His being asked to leave had nothing to do with crashing a party or trying to get in without paying.
Sheesh. You don't know what you're talking about!

Douglass: "of course,by arrogantly insinuating that those who disagree are simply not as intellegent,or somehow mentally ill."

Douglass, have you also noticed a trend amongst the left leaners to bash the mentally ill? I think it would be meritorious to parse through some of the more left blogs and find that in fact their IS a trend in that direction--despite railings against those who stand accused of homofobia, massagerists, rascists, and anti-feminiSS, it appears it is still acceptable to deride the mentally ill, especially at PZ's blog( just read through the comments--they are generally rabidly insensitive to the mentally ill)...

78

Doug,

It is true that many people were sent information about how to sign up for this showing, and PZ Myers and his family, as well as Richard Dawkins, all signed up the way they were supposed to.

It happens that the producer of the film recognized PZ and tossed him out of the theater.

Your side did something really awful. Deal.

Douglas, you have sinned. Go to confession.

Posted by: Elizabeth | April 15, 2008 10:42 PM

80

Wait, so if this showing was invite-only as you claim, how exactly did Myers' name end up on the admissions list? How did he get tickets?

Actually, Douglass, forget those. I only have one question I'd really like you to answer. Are you really deluded enough to believe what you're saying, or do know how patently false it is.

I'll admit, though, I wasn't aware of the existence of massagerists. Napoleon, could you provide any links on these anti-massage crusaders to satisfy my curiousity?

Kevin Miller apologized to PZ Myers (for accusing him of 'gatecrashing') on the 21 march. I've seen this get very little play in the blogosphere but it seems significant to me. Kevin Miller as the writer of Expelled is inside the 'expelled camp'. If Mathis and others has kept on stating PZ 'gatecrashed' since the 21 March this suggest they could've/should've known different.

When I first heard what went down at the Minneapolis screening, I understood that PZ Myers and Richard Dawkins had attempted to sneak in under false pretenses and that PZ got caught. However, PZ claims to have followed the proper procedure--registering under his own name, not packing a video camera, etc.--and I believe him. (I have no idea if Dawkins did the same.) I also understood that the screening was by invitation only. I did not realize that there was an online form for people to sign up and reserve a spot. (I'm the writer, so I'm not really privy to the marketing side of things.) So if PZ followed the correct procedures, why was he still kicked out? I'll let the producers of Expelled speak to that--which they will do shortly. And trust me, it's not because they were afraid of him.

As for me, I would like to apologize to PZ for the misinformation on my blog.

Mahan: Try www.feministing.com
a place where all good touch is bad touch, and they are out of touch... massages AND masseuserists are despised there especially if they are male; they are a place where all touch is bad unless it is invasive, boundary crossing, and and maternal( but with a long talk afterwards), or disciplinary--from the closeted womens gym class teacher for example...

Odd, you'd think Expelled!'s producers would want the press that those two would have generated, and even have had cameras on hand to record it themselves. Something's clearly not being said, whether or not it's duplicitous and malicious.

Perhaps the guest list got loaded by practical jokers? It was a web sign-up after all. What sort of verification was put into this? Check on a throw-away email address?
Ameritania Hotel New York

I could easily see the guy vetting the list ...

"We've got 21 'Charles Darwins' msn nickleri

and 15 'Thomas Huxleys'. And look, 5 'Richard Dawkins'. I removed all I found - I just hope one didn't slip by."

I find it more amusing the amount of time used and wasted getting all worked up over a movie.

In a sense Expelled has proven one thing, that the people opposed to any mention of Intelligent Design are rabid in their convictions.

Simply amazing... Must have evolution all figured out with all this free time eh?
