The Latest Obscenely Underreported Natural Disaster: 10,000 - 15,000 Dead in Cyclone Nargis

This is in Myanmar, where a repressive military government has yet to allow relief workers mustering now in nearby Thailand to enter the country to lend assistance.

Cyclone Nargis made land fall Saturday in southern Myanmar in the vicinity of Labutta with sustained winds of up to 120 mph. It is only now being reported to any significant degree, even though it was clear that this would be a major disaster even before land fall.

"Reports are coming out of the delta coast, particularly the Irrawaddy region, that in some villages up to 95 percent of houses have been destroyed," said Matthew Cochrane at the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' Geneva headquarters.

"Widespread destruction is obviously making it more difficult to get aid to people who need it most," said Michael Annear, regional disaster management coordinator for the federation.

The situation in the countryside remained unclear because of poor communications and roads left impassable by the storm.

come now greg: those with the gold MAKE the rules. a disaster about to happen is only a wreck for those that are aware. look at my present residence. you asked why. to what accord? why does it matter? me, you and a dog named boo will not change it.

Although i have visited Thailand, your picture seems much more culturally advanced to me now then the place where i find myself.

According to CIA World Factbook

...the military authorities in Burma have promoted the name Myanmar as a conventional name for their state; this decision was not approved by any sitting legislature in Burma, and the US Government did not adopt the name...
So unless they get the name right there's going to be difficulty getting aid to them.
BTW - did you know that oranges originate in the Burmese highlands?
