Gotha!!! Big Goof in Press Report

Posted on: June 24, 2008 4:39 PM, by Greg Laden

We anthropologists love this stuff. This is why we go to zoos. So we can stand around near the ape cage and say to people .. "No, that's not a monkey. It's an ape...." and so on.

Look a this cute little guy:

Obviously, this is an emperor tamarin, Sanguinus imperator. But the news report labels it as an Emporer tamarin and uses this headline:

HA! Lemurs are, of course, prosimians, while tamarins are New World monkeys. That's like calling a deer a cow, roughly.

I quickly ad, I no my blog is ful of erors. But I do not have an editorial staff and it's free.

I'm certainly not professed enough to be able to always name a species precisely, but I could at least tell that was not a lemur. Actually, I thought it was a Lorax. I'm glad you cleared that up for me.

There is actually a black-and-white ruffed lemur in the story, but it has a similar name to the tamarin. I think the editor who wrote the headline confused the two.

I think my favorite part of the article is the arthritic tapir who "acts like he's five years younger" since getting acupuncture. Start chasing me with needles and I'm going to move a lot faster too.

Admit it, you aren't really shocked/outraged at the confusion of a tamarin and a lemur... you just wanted to post that ultra-cool-cute picture of the Lorax.

First, please stop talking about me!

Second, "Free"??? You told me I had to send you a nickle every time I visited and a quarter for commenting, a dime if it was a witty comment.

I'm glad to see that you have been able to save your dimes, Lorax. :)
