New Reader Poll

Category: Blogging
Posted on: June 2, 2008 5:49 PM, by Greg Laden

The Science Blogs Overlords have a new reader poll for your enjoyment. This one asks what computer operating system you use.

My prediction:

78 percent windows (of some form);
17% macs;
05% Linux/Unix or variant.

It will be interesting to see the numbers. I have to answer Windows (if I want to be honest), since that's what I'm stuck with at work and the question asks what I use most. I expect the distribution will depend on how many people's work depends heavily on computers and how many of those are in academia and have some control over what machines they use.

It's somewhat odd that they're doing that, since I assume the people running the website would be able to get that information through their traffic analysis system. I would think that Mac OS X/Linux users would have a higher representation in the poll due to self selection.

Their traffic analysis won't consolidate users loading the blog from multiple computers running different operating systems. So the poll could pick up new information.

I agree on the self-selection, and there's also the problem of reading the question correctly. I nearly answered Mac. I'm the backup IT resource for my office (all Windows), but I think of myself as a Mac user. I'd almost clicked the submit button before I thought, "Most? Oh, that's different."

What if you're too embarrassed to admit you're using XP Home Edition?

Is it Ok to lie in order to not bring shame upon your (future, possible) children?

Well, Janie, my first piece of advice would be not to bring it up at all. :)

However, since it's too late for that, I think you're stuck with a lie. Make it a good one, like how the creationists break into your house every night and reinstall it no matter how many times you switch to something rational. They're also good at taking the blame for the dirty dishes left in the sink.

I am so all over that, Stephanie.

Thanks.
