Because, verily (I've been using that word a lot lately) the Everlovin' God has decided to not tell Jesse Ventura to run for Senate in Minnesota.
Praise the lord...

Not being a resident of Minnesota, I would appreciate it if residents like Prof. Laden and Prof. Myers would inform us as to what their beef is with Mr. Ventura. When I hear him interviewed or giving a speech, he strikes me as a well read, intelligent and articulate individual who seems to make a lot of sense. In what way would he make an inferior senator then the two major party candidates? In particular, he stated last night on Larry King that he runs second to Senator Coleman and ahead of Franken in opinion polls so it would appear that Franken isn't doing too well.

SLC, as a Minnesotan, I have two major beefs with him. This is the guy who shut down vehicle inspections to fund reductions in the highest license fees. I don't breathe quite as well as I used to. He's also the guy who had such great attention to detail as our governor that shortly after signing, with much fanfare, a Day of Reason proclamation, had a Day of Prayer proclamation slipped into his stack of bills to be signed and was paying little enough attention that he signed it.
So basically, he's a libertarian blowhard who's much better at (and more interested in) criticizing others for how they govern than he is at doing the job himself.

@Stephanie Z: A minor quibble. Ventura is a small-l libertarian like Robt. Mugabe is a small-d democrat -- which is to say not very much.
Big-L Libertarian, yes, he fits that mold quite well indeed.

Matt, just to quibble with your quibble, he's a bit of both, but yes, point taken. Of course, he's mostly a Jesse-ian, philosophically and politically.

I'm the least anti-Ventura person you'll meet in Minnesota who is not a member of the Libertarian, Independence or Republican party. Put it another way, I'm the most Pro-Ventura DFLer you'll meet.
And no, the guy should not be our senator.
The polls are pretty irrelevant in this regard as well, at this point.

Jesse got my vote as governor in part because both parties had some real jerks running. (H. Humphrey III and Norm Coleman who is still a jerk!)
He didn't do a good job working within the system to try to get things he wanted changed. (Like a bicameral legislature to a unicameral legislature. Not gonna' happen when, at the time, both houses were controlled by different parties.)
That said, he was a maverick, and would liven up the race, but I want to know why all this bother about getting the media to think he might run; then, not running. What a bunch of BSing!
I wouldn't have voted for him, but I would loved to see him in a debate with Coleman and Franken.
