Nigerian Attack Threat Comes to Fruition

Category: Politics
Posted on: July 28, 2008 9:45 PM, by Greg Laden

As predicted, there was an attack on oil fields in Nigeria. This involved an attack on two pipelines in the Delta Region. Shell has stoped ppumping through one of the pipelines.

The pipeline attacked by militants carries 130,000 barrels per day, according to Reuters news agency.

...

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend) claimed responsibility for the attacks.

They attacked a major trunk pipeline in Nembe Creek, Shell confirmed.

The location of the second attack is yet to be confirmed.

The oil companies have reneged, apparently, on paying MEND the protection money they demand to curtail attacks. That they do.

I would be a bit more sympathetic to a group like MEND if they were not so obviously a group of opportunistic thugs and gangsters. Even Hamas makes the effort to maintain social network services denied to the Palestinians by the Israelis. These guys claim that they are fighting for the poor and against the blood oil, but the fact that they are keeping their extorted money just goes to show that they have found a pretty good source of income.

i know right, mike! here, it's just another day in the life. it's the brutal attacks where people are killed that catch attention, the others, like this one are noted but that's about it. you can't keep up with them all.
