Remember that song? If you play it backwards, you hear that Paul is Dead.
Well, this time it's for real. WE'RE NUMBER NINE. This blog, with its 18 readers, has achieved that status of Position Number Nine on The Wikio Rankings
We are the ninth greatest Science Blog on Earth.
But really, we're better than that. Here's why. This is the list:
1 Wired Science
2 io9
3 Pharyngula
4 Gristmill
5 Watts Up With That?
6 AutoblogGreen
7 Respectful Insolence
8 Universe Today
9 Greg Laden's Blog
10 Dispatches from the Culture Wars
OK. Wired science is not a science blog. It's a blog linked to a major, major publication. It does not count. So everybody moves up one.
io9 is not a science blog. It is an entertainment blog. Seriously. It does not count. Everybody moves up one.
AutoblogGreen is a car blog. It does not count.
So, the modified list is:
1 Pharyngula
2 Gristmill
3 Watts Up With That?
4 Respectful Insolence
5 Universe Today
6 Greg Laden's Blog
7 Dispatches from the Culture Wars
We're number six! We're number six!

Comments
I'd leave io9 on there. I've met Annalee. You don't want to mess with her. Talk with her, yes, at length. Mess with her? No.

Ummm... then the Seed blogs don't count either. So now the list is:
1. Gristmill
2. Watt's up with that?
3. Universe Today

Dave: I don't know about no stinking seed blogs. Scienceblogs.com is as you know not exactly Seed's Blog. Wired.com is Wired's blog. So I do not count it. I count this along side SciAm's blogs, other major on-site magazine blogs.
io9 ... No way jose. The word "science" appears in the io9 "about" page only next to the word "fiction" as in "science fiction" and the site'es motto is "Strung out on science fiction".... That's a science fiction blog that may be does some science, not a science blog. Science fiction.

I was in no way basing my advice on the merits of your (or my) argument, trust me.
Hmm, it amuses me as I type this that She's Such a Geek is staring at me from the blogroll, since Annalee and Charlie from io9 edited that anthology as well. They don't seem to have much to do with the site, though.
And since I was too busy being a smart ass in my first comment to say it, congrats.

We're number...20-something!!!...Yea!

So when was the last time "Dispatches from the Culture Wars" had something about science?
Posted by: Kevin W. Parker | July 3, 2008 5:51 PM
Kevin: Interestingly, I'm sure that Dispatches gets a LOT more traffic than I do, yet I'm ahead of them in the ranking. This obviously means that adjustments have been made on the basis of how much science is covered. Or, it could be the nice note I wrote the Wikio editors on the back of that portrait of Benjamin Franklin.

Greg, you and Dispatches aren't too far apart in Technorati authority, which is close to how these ratings are done. The difference is that these take into account the rating of those who link to you. I think the Franklin goes to PZ.

You should have a Magic Hat #9 to celebrate. I did that earlier this evening, in fact, although I didn't yet know what I was celebrating at the time.

Congratulations on beating out Bad Astronomy. Hmmm ... where is Bad Astronomy? It's not even in the top 100.
I wonder if there are any other science blogs that have been excluded from the list of science blogs? :-)

Hi Greg,
Congratulations on your 9th (6th??) position.
Just to say if anyone thinks we've missed out any other blogs, please don't hesitate to post them up here or contact us via our site (wikio.com). We obviously intend our rankings to be as thorough as possible, and are always looking to further improve/refine them.
Cheers, Greg... and well done!

Good going!

Congrats and good hunting to catch up with Pharyngula.
Just out of curiosity, I did a search on Wikio for Tangled Up in Blue Guy to see if I was in the Top 100,000 in any category. It wasn't listed at all. So, when I submitted it, they sent me an e-mail that it had all ready been submitted. When? By whom? And why can't their database find a ranking?
I'll stick with my top 35,000 ranking on Technorati, thank you.

Mike, I suspect they just don't have a clue how to classify you, which is a good thing right up until they want to put you on a list.
Posted by: Stephanie Z | July 5, 2008 3:18 PM
Mike,
You have to write your ranking goal on the back of a recent portrait of Benjamin Franklin and send that to them.
Posted by: Greg Laden | July 5, 2008 3:42 PM
I intend to write my desired ranking on the back of a portrait of me.
I'll bet that works just as well, with apologies to Ben.
(Now I just have to wait to hook up with A.Real.Girl to get that portrait done...)

Congrats, Greg! I'm so glad to know that our political pinky-fight of yore did not cost you readership and ranking, but think you should quit with the planetary limitations: to the best of my knowledge yours is the 9th (6th) Best Science Blog in the Universe! Wahahahaha.

Thanks you. This is because my browser accepts cookies.

I call bias.
Wikio won't even accept my blog into their rankings, never-mind the the fact that unlike 3 in the top ten I actually write about peer-reviewed science, and my traffic is far in excess of some of the sites in the top 100.
Pfft, don't care about your stupid ranking anyway *sulks*

Martin, I have left you a comment on your blog. Please do explain to me what you did and I'll make sure your blog is properly indexed.
Mark, where did you search? Did you submit your blog?
And Greg I'm sorry for hijacking your comments page to sort out indexation problems on Wikio.
Oh and Greg's right, all Wikio correspondence is communicated on the back of portraits of Benjamin Franklin, green ones... except outgoing messages which are usually overseen by George Washington...
Posted by: Dan | July 8, 2008 6:50 AM
Stephanie, even I don't know how to classify me. Greg, I don't have any spare pics of Franklin to send to Wikio. Can you spot me one?
And JanieBelle, when I rank you you are often on top, but sometimes on the bottom.
Posted by: Mike Haubrich, FCD | July 8, 2008 11:34 PM
Mike, have sent you an email to tidy up the submission of your blog - email is a one off, of course; after that it's Benjamins only.
