The MSNBC anchor on Morning Joe keeps asking the Democratic organizers they've got on about the attempts of the Republicans to ridicule the democrats for the setup for Obama's talk tonight.
Problem is, she keeps pronouncing it wrong.
rih DICK ool
Like "ridiculous" shortened but with no changes in emphasis.
Sometimes these people can be so AB cerd.

That's bizarre. Maybe the similarity between "ridicule" and "ridiculous" somehow kept her from ever making the connection between the word spelled "ridicule" and the word pronounced "RI-di-kyul"?

Probably just trying to show solidarity with the present encumbant.

I don't know if you get the CBC in Minnesota (I imagine you don't), but they have a chronic problem with this sort of thing. I long ago concluded that there was a company policy that dictated putting the emPHAsis on the wrong syLAble on specific words, because it's too consistent across announcer/anchor/correspondent/whatever to be coincidence. It's damned annoying.

The strange thing about language is that you are free to mispronounce words all you like so long as you get enough people to do the same thing. Then it stops being a mispronunciation and becomes part of a "dialect". Such is evolution.
