What do we do when Scienceblogs.com reaches 1,000,000 comments?

Category:
Posted on: August 29, 2008 12:18 AM, by Greg Laden

You have probably already heard that some time in the month of September, the millionth comment will be placed on some blog somewhere on the Scienceblogs Dot Com networks. We think the servers can only hold one million comments, so when this happens the whole thing shuts down.

So, what will we do when the End Times come?

Party!

The Overlords have suggested that each of us bloggiers arranges a meetup some time in September, during a window that they think The Reckoning will likely occur . . PZ Myers and I, because of our geographical propinquity, are currently negotiating a cooperative effort to be known as PZ and Greg's Excellent Party.

Minnesotans, Iowans, Dakotans, Wisconsinites and Canadians, please feel free to chime in regarding your ideas for venues. Ultimately this will be determined by our busy schedules as much as anything else, but we would very much appreciate ideas.

Sure, limit your audience geographically. I say we all meet in Sydney to celebrate.

One millions entries isn't that much, really. Assuming this is a standard database install, it should be able to handle fifteen million entries, at least before displaying errors.

To be on the safe side: http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/000796.html helps.

If Seed will pay for a trip to Sydney, hey, I'm down. Other than that, we could shuffle of to Buffalo. Or, St. Cloud. Something like that. My only requirement is that the beer be good and a motel near.

Sure,it's a great news that over 100000 comments ,would you celebrate it?

Posted by: Emily | August 29, 2008 7:14 AM

Is this really gonna collapse or is this a y2k-esque scare to make you post less?

If we want to make it convenient for PZ, The Mermaid in Mounds View has a large area that is not dominated by a big screen tv. There is an arcade there, too for those that are interested. Also, consider that there is a decent hotel attached (Americinn Motel) in case anyone has an extra beer.

It's "crawling home" distance for me.

Mimi ... You wish, baby!!! But seriously, no, we're just going to switch to Base 11 for a while. That will buy us some time.

Mike: I used to live even closer to the Mermaid than you do, but I never went there. It is practically an historic monument.

These are all good ideas, as are the many I've received by email. Keep 'em coming!

http://www.theliffey.com/ has a nice big outside balcony area in downtown St. Paul

As someone who's planned September birthday get-togethers for years, I strongly recommend not counting on outside seating. Rain and/or bluster are fairly likely. It probably won't snow, but I wouldn't depend on it.

Where is Saint Paul, approximately?

You should go to the Town Hall Brewery in Minneapolis. It's in the 7 corners area on Washington and Cedar.

I vote for partay in Toronto. No? No.

Oh well. Have fun without me.

Posted by: Jake | August 29, 2008 3:09 PM

Why not the Kitty Cat Klub, near the Minneapolis campus?
It's pretty quiet before 11pm most nights, and it has comfy seating! Not much in terms of food though, sadly.

Town hall is okay, but it might be hard seating so many folks in one area.

I hope it is close to the cities, though, so that car-less hippies like myself can join the fun!

Other suggestions from PZ's site include O'Gara's in St. Paul, MN; BULLDOG NE in Minneapolis (NE Minneapolis, Qwerty's home town), Station 4 in St. Paul; Grumpy's in Minneapolis, the Mermaid; the Black Forest Inn in Minneapolis (great strudel); Town Hall Brewery, Barely John's or Bryant-Lake Bowl (which also features bowling);the Liffey (no location given); and Sweeney's on Dale in St. Paul.

Finally, now that I live only an hour away I can partake in some of the festivities.

McGoverns inS.Paul has a generous beer selection and good food. Its on 7th ST. near Excel Center.
Glockenspiel has mostly European beer and very good German food. Its farther down 7th , near St. Claire.

Conjecture is the last weekend in September. If the Borg's up for sponsoring a relaxacon, the Conjecture folks would probably welcome the moolah in return for holding a Science Blog event. :)

Posted by: Alan Kellogg | August 29, 2008 8:28 PM

Hey, I'd go with McGovern's. It's pretty close to the hospital in case a fight breaks out.

Posted by: Mike Haubrich, FCD | August 29, 2008 9:25 PM

The Liffey is located in St. Paul, kitty-corner across Kellogg from the Excel Energy Center. It's part of the Holiday Inn there, in case someone over-indulges.

I'm sure we could do it at the U of M Campus Club in Coffmann Union and I would be delighted and honored to put the event together for you fine gentlemen. How many are you thinking will attend?

Posted by: Rick Schauer | August 29, 2008 11:21 PM

...and I'll cover the cost of hors 'dourves. Ergo, free beer and eats all at a central local on a bus line!

Furthermore, perhaps we could invite PZ's buddy Bob Bruinicks up for a toddy and a cracker. -lol-

Posted by: Rick Schauer | August 29, 2008 11:31 PM

I think Rick has a great idea here, and a generous offer.

Posted by: Mike Haubrich, FCD | August 30, 2008 8:15 AM

Whoo! I'm there.
