Technology Tidbits

Hewlett Packard is working on an alternative operating system to replace Microsoft Vista on the consumer-oriented systems that it sells. At the same time, HP is working on technology that will allow users who are stuck with, I mean, using Vista to bypass some of the roadblocks that the Microsoft operating system throws up to make easy things hard to do. Not surprisingly, the alternative operating system would be based on Linux.

From slashdot:

"Fresh from its ad featuring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld eating churros and discussing shoes, Microsoft has introduced a new advertisement in which the aging former CEO and comedian take up residence with a family, causing infighting and malicious plots by the family members. Although the ad does not mention Microsoft's operating system directly, it does mirror the real world experience of the company's products -- appearing where not wanted, hard to remove, causing administration headaches, and finally being forced out in hopes of getting one's living space back."

Here's the long version of the ad, which you will not see on TV:

Anybody got any ideas of what is going on here?

On to matters of more immediate import: Youtube is banning Terrorist Training Videos from its site. Just so you know.

I'm so happy to see Linux making inroads on the desktop. It rocks on the server side.

I've used Ubuntu with much success. I bet it'll be based off of that.

@Tony: More likely they'll base on straight Debian, like Nokia has.

I'm really intrigued by this recent development in tiny laptops that seems to be making the OS a commodity layer over hardware that enables software applications, as it should be. With any luck we'll start to see software developers wanting to target multiple platforms in the near future. This would turn the OS into a commodity across the board and would potentially translate to a wider CPU base as well.

I love it. :) Microsoft is spending $300 million on an ad campaign just to get people to “give Vista a chance.” The next version of Windows (Windows 7) is set to be out in 2010 or 2011. Ubuntu releases a new version every six months, and other Linux distros also have frequent new releases. Do you think Microsoft is finally feeling the pinch?

I think Microsoft is feeling the pinch in multiple ways. Not only is it receiving much competition from Apple and Google, but now from other companies who see a chance in the market to compete with Microsoft. But I wonder if creating a new linux-based OS will end up hurting HP's sales. I think its a make or break decision.
