Its a laptop. No, its a cell phone. No, its a ....

Posted on: October 5, 2008 10:19 AM, by Greg Laden

Hardware has gotten faster and more powerful, but the damn computers do not boot up any faster than they used to. Well, maybe a little, but not enough. Meanwhile, the primary system people use, Windows, has become increasingly bloated. As a result, it is very difficult, as it always has been, to flip on your laptop to do a quick check of email, the traffic for your commute, weather, etc. In fact, the easiest way to do this today is to fire up your iTouch or your cell phone!

Well, according to LinuxDevices.com, Dell has come up with a kick-butt solution to this problem. They are installing a cell phone brain into a laptop. The cell phone brain will run a very fast, efficient, and reliable operating system (Linux, as a matter of fact). You'll be able to fire up the laptop as a basic browser email-checker in a flash and it will hardly use any electricity. If this is all you use your laptop for, with that massive battery it's got, it will last for MONTHS between recharges. Seriously, I am not making this up. Check it out here.

I keep getting surprised by the number of people who don't wear watches because as long as they have their cell phones they know the time.

And that is how fast you want booting up to go -- just like flipping open a communicator on the original Star Trek.

It is always nice when someone gets one of my allusions. Very rare.

Greg, how are we to tell when it's an allusion you think will be obvious and one you need reassurance that people get? Because the last time you mentioned one you thought no one had understood....

Which one was that?

Nobody got my reference to the movie 200 Motels!

There were two. I remember "...and one ugly one." Admittedly, my reference was a reference to your reference, but I knew what you meant.

I'll give you 200 Motels, though. I was a bit young for that.

Somewhere I said I make a veiled reference to Frank Zappa every 200 posts.
