OMG, Your Head's On Fire!!!!

Posted on: October 12, 2008 3:41 PM, by Greg Laden

image.jpgDo not delay. Do not equivocate. Do not think twice. Just get to the theater and buy your tickets, find a seat, turn off your cell phone, and sit back and enjoy Bill Maher's Religulous!

In this film, Maher makes a handful of critically important points. Like, if our world is led by people who are expecting, waiting for, even hoping for, The End Times (or some similar event) then ... well... then we are all deeply fucked. This is probably the main point, backed up by lot of other important points about religion.

The other objective of the film is to make fun of religion and religious people. And that part is hysterical. Must see.

Some say Bill Maher goes to far. Maybe. But I personally think strapping a bomb onto your torso and blowing up a bunch of school children is going to far. Some say Bill Maher is obscene. Maybe. But I say that a claim that HIV/AIDS is god's way of punishing people because they are gay is obscene.

Bill Maher does not give religion any quarter. As it should be.

And it is just plain funny. And scary.

Much to my surprise it was actually playing here in the vast religious cornfield known as Central Illinois. But there were only about 20 people in the theater including me and MrsDoF.

I could tell it was going to be fun from the people who gave it bad reviews.

Funny, George, that was almost exactly Abbie's take, too. I do have to get out and see this one.

I grew up around Mormons who believe we lived in the End Times. Lately, when I think about the concept, I hear Gore Vidal talking about George W. Bush: "Maybe he's like Reagan. Maybe he believes we live in the Last Days."

I just watched part of "The Earth's Last Days" on the history channel. It's a more (or less) science based approach to looking at ways the world could end (giant meteor, runaway warming, nuclear holocaust, yada yada)

Anyway, they asked a bunch of people what they would do if they knew the world was going to end.

What shocked me was the number of women that said they would have a baby as soon as possible.

WTF?

Maybe that's why all those fundie guys want everyone to believe they are in the Last Days. Do you realize how EASY it would be to get laid?

Maybe the whole thing is just a male strategy to get a little before they die.
