Did you vote for Obama? You must now say three Hail Marys.

The priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church in downtown Greenville has told parishioners that those who voted for Barack Obama placed themselves under divine judgment because of his stance on abortion and shouldn't receive Holy Communion until they've done penance.

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman told The Greenville News on Wednesday that church teaching doesn't allow him to refuse Holy Communion to anyone based on political choices, but that he'll continue to deliver the church's strong teaching on the "intrinsic and grave evil of abortion" as a hidden form of murder.

So, anyone from the IRS paying attention here?

Thank the Good Lord for separation of church and state.I would hate for these guys to be "The Federal Government's Church". We would have the inquisition again.

the church is also anti-capital punishment. hope the good father is fair enough to mix in heaping spoonfuls on the evils of revenge-killing by the state - y'know, for the "values voters" amongst his parishioners.

Yeah, my first thought upon hearing this wasn't really outrage. It was more along the lines of "So, can we start taxing these bastards yet?"
If not,then when?
What the hell more could they possibly do to interfere in politics than they already have and are?

I couldn't count on both hands the number of churches down here that had their signs (The ones that usually have the smarmy message that a retarded 2nd grader would find pithy.) set up with something along the lines of "Vote no to the evil negro antichrist muslim or Jesus will hate you!".
Not those exact words, of course. Just something along those lines.
So not even turning the front of the church into a political billboard is sufficient, it would seem.

Well, his bishop did slap him up side the head for that.

Of course nobody will lose their tax exemptions, it's America! Treating churches as they should be under the law would be the opening salvo of Hte Perseekushun of hte xians.

Maybe the parishioners, rather than be chastened, will leave to find a place of worship more welcoming. Or just leave.

Maybe the parishioners, rather than be chastened

Catholicism isn't about being chastened. You do what you want to do, then do the pennance, it's kind of like paying a tax.

So in essence, sin is an expected part of the ritual? If you don't sin, you don't get to fully take part in the spiritual life?

Under those circumstances, everyone should have voted for Obama and then been spiritually cleansed. Or maybe they had other sins to be forgiven and had no room for the additional Obama sin.

"So in essence, sin is an expected part of the ritual? If you don't sin, you don't get to fully take part in the spiritual life?"

Don't you know that humans are born sinners? That's where baptism comes in. The Church gets you coming and going.

"Catholicism isn't about being chastened"
No, it's about money, pure and simple. As the priest as my wife's church put it: "I know these are tough times, but you cannot fall behind on your donations to the church. ask yourself: do i really need to take my family out again? wouldn't the better thing to do be to give the money to the church, where it could do some good? I'm sure you'll make the correct choice."

that's what you get when you let people who have little more than a high school equivalency degree put on fancy robes, give them fancy titles, and pretend they have some insight on life.

darn - should have taken my meds before i typed. apparently my shaky hands hit Post twice. Sorry about that.

"We would have the inquisition again."

Welcome to the last eight years!

Blasted Catholic upbringing; now I'm going to have that prayer running through my head for the next hour....

And, yes, the Bish did thwack the culprit priest (who other reports make out to be more a man of Gold than man of God).

So in essence, sin is an expected part of the ritual? If you don't sin, you don't get to fully take part in the spiritual life?

Or at least, a spiritual life without some hearty sinning is hardly worth living....

If I could remember how the hail mary went, I would accommodate you. Well, actually, no I wouldn't...

It is long past time for these goddamned vampires to be staked!

Well, his bishop did slap him up side the head for that.

MikeN, abb3w, can either of you point me to a source for that? I want to read the particulars. (Well, I want to slap him myself, but harder.)

Yes, I'll go Google now. Nevertheless.

I suspect this "slap" reference is a reference to the sacrament of confirmation.

"I know these are tough times, but you cannot fall behind on your donations to the church. ask yourself: do i really need to take my family out again? wouldn't the better thing to do be to give the money to the church, where it could do some good? I'm sure you'll make the correct choice."

Yes, like more big ass expensive Catholic cathedrals. That's exactly the kind of 'good' the world needs. MUCH more important than feeding your family, of course.

/gold-digging catholic priest

Asshole. I gotta donation for him, but it ain't money. I found it in a cow pasture.

Absolutely! All religions that have a tri-omni God implicitly don't belive in one of the three. Catholicism is what you get when you dont really belive that God is omniscient: you have to attract his attention, and that's what the robes and incense and buildings are for.

I thought the term "hail Mary" came as Joseph and his wife were getting ready for the trip to Bethlehem, when a sudden heavy thunderstorm arose. Joseph looked out the window and said, "That looks like hail, Mary...."
