"Finding Family" with Dr. Matt Kaplan
Do you have questions about your ancestry before written time? When you've sent your DNA to a lab to find out about your ancient ancestors, are you curious about how they get the data? National Geographic was one of the first organizations to answer these questions. The result is the story of our deep ancestry -- the true human lineage traced to 60,000 years ago.
To get the story, the world famous Genographic Project has tested DNA from over 260,000 people. The results tell the amazing story of our species migration from eastern Africa to all parts of the world. This Sunday, Lynn Fellman will talk to Dr. Matt Kaplan, head of the lab at the University of Arizona where they sequence all the DNA for the Genographic Project.
Matt will explain the process from creation of the kits, to sequencing DNA, and the final analysis that reveals your Hap Group. Matt has great stories about the history of the project and how the genealogy company, Family Tree DNA, works with them. Even more interesting are the new projects the lab is developing like the Shoah Project.
The Shoah Project is a humanitarian effort that seeks to use DNA information from Holocaust survivors and their family members to reunite families. The Project aims to match displaced relatives, provide Shoah orphans and lost children with information about their biological families and, eventually, assist in the forensic identification of Holocaust-era remains.
