Students of Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, Kansas, turned out in force yesterday to counter the protests of the infamous Westboro Baptist church congregation who, in typical fashion, turned up sporting placards with such slogans as “God Hates Fags” and “9/11 Was God’s Punishment” protesting the school’s acceptance of LGBT people.

Gotta love their poll. 96% against the church, 3% for.

Fred Phelps and his posse are going to be protesting at Albany (NY) High School on March 6th.

    I suspect they’ll get a very large counter-protest here.

Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church are nothing more than attention-seekers who mount these “protests” in order to get into the news. As far as they’re concerned, any media mention of them counts as a victory. Of course they’re going to be painted as kooks, hatemongers, and villains — after all, to them, the entire outside world is controlled by Satan, and naturally Satan would only say (and publish) bad things about heavenly crusaders such as the Phelps clan.

What to do about them? The answer to this is simple: ignore them outright. Walk past them on the street, don’t even acknowledge their presence, and don’t counter-protest them. I am confident that when faced with silent opposition of this sort, the Westboro Baptist Church will shrivel up and blow away.

Not next to the old Milne School anymore. The new Albany High is further out Washington, between Partridge and Main.

And, FYI, the former Milne building is now mainly occupied by UAlbany’s School of Social Welfare.

Yea, I remember now, that Abany HS moved … quite a long time ago, just after I went to Milne, as I recall.

Of course Milne (which was Milne, Richardson, Page and Housted buildings) was previously the old, old U campus, with Milne as part of the school of ed (Normal School). Then, when the U moved out to the new campus, Milne expanded somewhat.

The protest this morning was pretty peaceful.
A few of them, many of us.
