Glad that you finally mentioned BOINC. Maybe other sci-blogers pick it up too.
As to the "more or less" part, there are a lot of projects besides SETI, you can pick one (or better yet, a few) that explain clearly what they are doing and you think they might be helpful in some way, from weather simulations to molecular biology.
I'll resume lurking now.
