Syncing Your To Do List

Category: LinuxTechnologyiPod Touch
Posted on: February 15, 2009 3:49 PM, by Greg Laden

I still have not found a satisfactory way to sync my calendar and to do list between the University's calendar server, my Windows "computer" at work, my Linux Laptop, the iPod Touch, and the main computer in the Blog Cave.

But we may be getting there.

To-do syncing has always been one of the gaping holes on the productivity side of the iPhone and iPod touch. Several third-party apps have filled this hole, but with Google Sync, to-do syncing gets even better.

The Knowliz weblog details how to set up popular to-do list manager Toodledo (and it's calendar feed feature) to work in conjunction with Google Calendar--and by extension, Google Sync--so that your to-do list syncs seamlessly between your calendar, to-do list, and iPhone.

I missed the scare quotes the first time I read this. Lovely.

One problem is that the front office does not have access to a piece of paper in my pocket or even a memory stick, and a piece of paper can't send me an email.

To each his/her own, in these matters, think.

Personally I try and steer clear of 'solutions' that somehow end up requiring more work, but as you say, to each their own.

I think this post is probably relevant?

Good luck!

I use google calendar - I gave up on outlook. Goog calendar can easily sync with my ipod touch using the new google sync. I also use toodledo. Its a nice web based to do list that includes a "notes" option for storing notes etc. It syncs to its own ipod app. Basically I turn on my ipod touch - hook up to wireless and I am all synced up. All my computers - home vista box, dual boot laptop, dual boot work machine are also all synced because it is all web based.

Incidentally, I think neuvasync has been made redundant by google sync.

www.getdropbox.com

Dropbox is a nice little app for syncing files across multiple computers.

Install on each of your machines, and DropBox creates a folder (the "dropbox.") You place files you want synced into the dropbox, and whenever each machine is connected to the webs, it automatically syncs the files. It even allows simultaneous instances of a file to be running on more than one machine. It's quite elegant, and allows me to use MS OneNote on my desktop, laptop, and netbook without spending any effort on moving files around.

I probably can't install it on the managed PC at the U. But it does look interesting and I've heard good things about it.

I finally gave up on the syncing. At one point I had grandiose visions of a master system for the whole family on Google calender, synced with my phone/pda, Outlook at work and Evolution at home. Didn't work out so well. Now I just use Outlook at work and copy everything to my Day-Timer, which is used for everything else. I don't actually use the ToDo list in Outlook. I either have it in my Day-Timer or I use the flags on emails to mark actionable items. Oh, and there's the omnipresent Moleskine for all the random notes and thoughts and details.

The analog approach just works better for me.
