GLBT Hate Crime Bill In The Works

Legislation to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of categories covered under federal hate crime law will be taken up Wednesday by the House Judiciary

It is expected the bill will be marked up and be sent to the full House for a vote, possibly before the end of the month.

The bill was introduced with bipartisan support by Reps. John Conyers (D-MI) and Mark Kirk (R-IL). In addition to LGBT rights groups, the bill has the support of more than 300 law enforcement, civil rights, civic and religious organizations.

Gay rights groups have been fighting to have the legislation passed for over a decade.

How to get through to a biggot in 5 easy steps vis-a-vie, gay marriage:
    1. Compare their repressive ideas to the Taliban.
    2. Remind them that “America” is the “World’s Greatest Country” with “liberty and justice for all”.
    3. Question their “patriotism”, with regards to that liberty and justice.
    4. Call them “Un-American”.
    5. Repeat the “Taliban” charge… and throw in the word, “evil” or “in-humane”.

What amazes me is that Rhode Island has hate crimes statutes that cover everything from:

    a) Race, Religion and ethnicity
    b) Sexual Orientation and Gender

Not only that, training is required for police forces regarding hate crimes too.

Not to mention we’ve had full EHCNDA (Employment, Housing and Credit Non Discrimination Act) since 1996 for LGB people, and since 2001 for Transgender. Yet we can’t get a marriage equality bill through.

Greg: I recall seeing Dolly Parton (asked about same-sex marriage) “Why shouldn’t they be as miserable as the rest of us?”
